Policy Statement:

I. N. Bloom Elementary School does not require school uniforms. The attached dress code will be followed by all students at Bloom Elementary School and distributed to all parents at the beginning of the school year. Bloom faculty, staff, and administration will support students in reaching compliance with the dress code.

Students will not be sent home for noncompliance of the dress code policy.

If there is a question about the appropriateness of a student’s dress, the decision will be made by the principal, assistant principal, or counselor.

BLOOM ELEMENTARY DRESS CODE

Bloom is an active, hands-on Kindergarten through 5th grade learning community. Just as adults dress appropriately for their work, proper attire for students at school is safer as well as more conducive to a positive educational experience for all.

Please discuss the following guidelines with your students and encourage them to come to school dressed appropriately for active learning in the classroom, Physical Education, Mindfulness and Dance, outdoor play, school garden, and outdoor weather.

• Clothing should be of an appropriate length and fitted at the waist so as not to expose the midriff or undergarments except as part of specific religious or cultural clothing.
• Tops must have straps.
• Clothing must be free of language or pictures inappropriate for a Kindergarten through 5th grade learning community.
• Footwear should be comfortable for active, hands-on learning in the classroom as well as stairs, Physical Education, Mindfulness and Dance, outside play, and the school garden. NO open-toe shoes or high heels. Shoes must be tied at all times.
• Clothing that covers the head is not allowed on heads in common areas of the building, such as hallways, with the exception of special “hat days” which will be announced in advance. For safety reasons, clothing that covers the head worn in common areas must allow for visibility of the back of the head except as part of religious or cultural headwear. Clothing that covers the head  may be worn in classrooms with teacher discretion.
• Cosmetics such as lipstick, make-up, and nail polish should be used at home with adult supervision.

If there is a question about the appropriateness of a student’s dress, any related decision will be made by the principal, assistant principal, or counselor. This decision will be communicated to the student’s family immediately.
