Student Applications: Activities 1-5
Each student/ group will complete the following 6 activities. These activities will structure our investigations of The Evil of Slavery: Life on the Plantations. Please keep this sheet in your Google drive, because we will make reference to it often during our work together.
1. Watch video Slavery Crash Course Video (14 minutes): When completed students should use the quizlet program and STUDY the attached list. You will be given a quiz on these terms on the third or fourth day of the Unit. (1 day)
2. Students will read the textual information posted. It is article 3.5: Reforming American Society. Then class will watch videos: Life Aboard a Slave Ship and Crash Course The Transatlantic Slave Trade
3. Making use of the attached PowerPoint on slavery, students will complete the first worksheet. Next, each student will complete the second attached form, by reading each of the 6 biographies (speeches etc.) and then choosing two of the people listed and doing some research on him or her including reading the attached article about the person of your choice... (2 days)
4. Watch the first ½ of the Movie: Night John (The movie is 96 minutes: 2 days) when ½ the movie is completed we will engage in the Slavery Brain Pop by accessing this link.

5. Finish Movie: Then discuss and complete the worksheet questions and character sketches on the movie Night John. (1 day)
Additionally, we will watch Crash Course #13 The Rise of Cotton
6. Students will engage in two or three rounds of Quizlet live the second half of the long class period. This is in preparation for your term quiz, which will be ??? Next, after completing the attached reading, students should use the provided essay page to write a 5 paragraph paper relating points A-D that follow A) What slaves in general endured on a day to day basis (should be 1 complete paragraph) and then B) What in particular the slave girl in the gully endured (should be 1 paragraph). Next, explain C) What aspects of plantation life would have been most difficult for YOU to endure (should be at least 1 paragraph) Finally, in part D, students must also use at-least one other source (and link the source) to further investigate slave life on plantations, give a brief summary (2 paragraphs) of this article.

7. With a partner (10 slides or more) or group of 3 create a presentation of 15 slides or more (not including your title screen) that takes slavery in the United States from the early 1600’s up to the outbreak of the Civil War. The project should be assembled in chronological order and must include both text (be sure to include MANY of your unit terms) and pictures. Each group may include one brief 2-4 minute video to further educate the viewers. These projects will be presented to the rest of the class. If working alone, you need to do a title screen and 8 more slides. (2 days)
