Dear Bobby Beaker:

I am pleased to provide you with the details of the work assignment associated with your 0.3 FTE Graduate Research Assistant appointment in the Department of Biology from 06/01/2018 through 09/14/2018. Your assignment is subject to the terms of the PSU-GEU Collective Bargaining Agreement (CBA).

In order to maintain your eligibility for a graduate assistant appointment, you must be enrolled full-time in a degree program, making good academic progress, and maintaining a good academic standing in your degree program.

Duties

You are assigned to assist Dr. Jason Podrabsky on his work funded by National Science Foundation Grant IOS-####### to study dormancy in annual killifishes. Job duties may include, but are not limited to, conducting experiments; collecting, organizing, or analyzing data; presenting findings; collaboration in preparing publications; and other research activities.

Expected Preparation

To adequately perform the duties described above you are expected to have read the available literature on the biology of annual killifishes and other literature associated with metabolic dormancy.

Required Trainings and Orientations

This work requires mandatory training in the use of animals in research, biosafety, and chemical hygiene. If you do not have documented proof of these trainings you are expected to complete the training as part of your work assignment prior to initiation of laboratory work covered by these trainings.

You are required to attend the Department’s Graduate Assistant Orientation prior to beginning work. You will be notified later of the date, time, and location of this training.

Health and Safety Information

This assignment is in a biological research laboratory and requires you to work safely with potentially harmful chemicals and organisms. Detailed information on the hazards present in your workspace should be detailed in the biosafety manual and chemical hygiene plan posted in your laboratory. It is essential that you familiarize yourself with this information prior to initiation of work.

Work Schedule

Typical work hours will be between 8 AM and 5 PM, but flexible hours are acceptable as long as they do not impede work progress. Work on living organisms sometimes requires non-standard work schedules. You should be willing and able to work flexible hours when the biology of the organism and/or the integrity of the data collected requires such a work schedule. In addition, you may be asked to work during University Closures, if safe travel to work is possible, as an essential employee with respect to the need to care for live vertebrate animals.
