Preliminary agenda (and minutes)

  1. Round table (who is attending)
  1. Ruth Duerr, Peter Pulsifer, Bill Manley, SiriJodha Khalsa, Nick Brown, Rebekah Ingram, Øystein Godøy, Allison Gaylord, Giulio Verazzo, Jan Rene Larsen, Nick Brown, Paul Thompson, Shannon Christoffersen, Christopher Arko, Mark Schildhauer
  1. Adoption of agenda
  1. Approved
  1. Review of minutes of previous meeting
  1. 2020-03-17
  1. Approved, to be published after strikeouts are removed.
  1. Review of action items
  1. Ruth to send an email out to PolarSemantics and PolarData emails and repository reps re verifying their content for the Polar Semantics Planning Matrix (see below)
  1. This task will be postponed until the revised matrix is available. Then relevant records are sent to the respective “owners”. Keeping task for now.
  1. Everyone to review their repository’s results of the Polar Semantics Planning Matrix and add anything from their work.  In particular the tab AggregatorsNSources  which is used to update the triple store work Peter is doing.
  2. New action in this meeting, Allison, Bill, Ruth, and Øystein to review structure of the matrix of harvesting relationships. The structure is to be discussed in email with the whole group.
  1. Polar Semantics Planning Matrix updates
  1. The matrix is available at Matrix of metadata harvesting relationships
  1. Discussion on how to progress with updates of the matrix.
  2. The matrix was initially created during the Polar Data Planning Symposium in Boulder and then updated during the Polar Architecture Workshop in Geneva when most of the protocol, metadata standards and semantic resources was added.
  3. The challenge now is to move forward in a manner allowing the paper in progress to be published. A major issue then is to ensure that service owners/providers update the matrix with relevant information. For this purpose a relatively simple spreadsheet may be beneficial but the information must at some point be transferred into a proper semantic representation. This will however require dedicated funding and resources. For now the spreadsheet is continued.
  4. The idea is to send relevant rows to the “owner” of those rows and ask for updates. Prior to doing this some more columns are added and the guidance on columns has to be updated to improve consistency of the information collected (although some inconsistency will persist).
  1. A task team of Ruth, Bill, Allison and Øystein volunteered to work on additional columns and guidance text, but work on this will be asynchronous (through email) with the whole Working Group invited to participate.
  1. Some specific comments  to clarify issues include
  1. Aggregator is an aggregating metadata catalogue or similar.
  2. Need columns on how often aggregation is done and what is actually aggregated (consider to include additional columns like on exchange protocols, metadata standards etc).
  1. The primary focus now is to push forward on the paper to be published.
  1. Ruth to send an email out to PolarSemantics and PolarData emails and repository reps re verifying their content.
  2. The matrix and other materials from this family of meetings are being documented in these two papers:
  1. PDPS White Paper Draft - Harvesting Portion
  1. Peter and Ruth to plan finishing paper (after April 1st). Planned for Data Science Journal.
  1. PDPS White Paper Draft - Recommendations Portion
  1. Ruth to finish recommendations section of the white paper,
  1. Polar Vocabularies Questionnaire.
  1. No time to discuss this in the meeting.
  2. Ruth to explore a data paper with support from Pier Luigi, Mark and Øystein.
  1. Pending
  1. Linking MOSAiC parameter terminology to Polar Semantics resources (Pier)
  1. Details are in previous meeting notes.
  2. No time to discuss this in the meeting.
  1. Schema.org updates (Ruth)
  1. Details are in previous meeting notes.
  2. No time to discuss this in the meeting.
  1. Status on modelling/visualisation of the harvesting matrix
  1. Brendan has generated a simple prototype visualization - not production ready but available here
  1. This site require login credentials (information provided upon request)
  1. Details are in previous meeting notes.
  2. No time to discuss this in the meeting.
  1. Awareness updates (roundtable)
  1. No time to discuss this in the meeting.
  1. Next meeting
  1. Agreed to do the third Tuesday of the month, at 19:00 UTC (21:00 CEST, 15:00 EDT, 13:00 MDT).
  1. Tentative date for the next meeting is Tuesday 19th May.
  1. Since not everyone is using Slack, emails should be circulated for each meeting.
