Museum School Dress Code
Appropriate dress and hygiene is an important part of the learning experience for all middle school students. Moreover, as a K-8 school, middle school students are in a unique position to serve as role models for younger students. A dress code, therefore, should be seen as a positive step towards building a learning community for all involved. The Museum School respects the individuality of all students and understands that students who choose to express themselves through their clothing will still have the freedom to do so within the parameters of the dress code below.
According to research by the National Association of Secondary School Principals (NASSP), a school dress code:
● Greatly affects student academic performance and their interaction with other students ● Positively affects classroom discipline and decreases disruptions
● Improves school climate by decreasing the negative effects of peer pressure ● Increases school spirit and pride
● Reduces security threats and improves school safety
ACCEPTABLE DRESS
● Clothing should reflect the Museum School values of respect, creativity and modesty ● Clothing must be clean, in good repair, and size appropriate
● All pants must be worn at the waist. A belt is required if pants DO NOT remain at the waist. ● Belts must be buckled and worn at the waistline.
● Dresses, shorts, skirts, skorts, and splits must be no higher than 6 inches from the top of the knee, unless when worn with leggings or tights.
● Head covering as part of a religious belief or medical need will be allowed.
● Hats or other types of headgear may only be worn in class with teacher’s permission
UNACCEPTABLE DRESS
● Clothing must be worn appropriately.
● Pants must be worn at the waist. Sagging pants are not acceptable.
● Low-cut blouses/shirts/tops or extremely tight tops, tube tops, see through, mesh or sheer tops or any top that exposes undergarments, cleavage or bare midriffs.
● Leggings or tights are considered undergarments and must be accompanied by dress code compliant outerwear.
● Pajamas, bedroom slippers, flip flops
● Sunglasses in classrooms
● Clothing with distracting phrases or words
● Shoes with wheels or stiletto heels
The final decision concerning the appropriateness of clothing will be made by the school administration
Consequences:
Students violating the dress code will be sent to the office and parents will be contacted. The student must remain in the office until the parent has arrived with an appropriate change of clothing, or students may choose to wear a loaned shirt or shorts if available. Repeat violations will warrant further disciplinary action.
(Note) Exceptions apply to students participating or taking part in student related activities/functions and other activities approved by the school administration.
