WRITING COMPOSITION

Course description: This course aims to prepare high school students for the rigors of effective academic writing. Students will focus on the basic traits of writing: ideas, organization, voice, word choice, sentence fluency, conventions (grammar, punctuation, capitalization, and spelling) and presentation. Using these traits, students will complete weekly writing assignments including descriptive, narrative, expository, and persuasive writing, and a research report. Emphasis will be on expository writing. Students will examine selected works of literature and learn to format a five-paragraph essay (and expand from there), write an effective thesis sentence, quote effectively, comply with MLA format, cite sources properly, and avoid plagiarism. Students completing this course satisfactorily will have the necessary basic skills for high school and college academic writing.

Prerequisite for French 2: completion of high school French 1 course, or consent of instructor.

Course Description: This 2nd year high school classe de français will continue the foundation laid in French 1.   Focus will still be on vocabulary, grammar (conjugating verbs in past tense, imperfect, future and conditional) and practical conversation skills (situations with friends, family, businesses).  Every lesson includes listening, speaking, reading, and writing.  French cultural awareness will be achieved through memorization of songs, poems and Bible verses.  And yes, we’ll continue the tradition of regular discussions and occasional  sampling of French foods.
