Correspondence
In:
- Eat my lunch: Ruvini, who coordinates the Wednesday lunches, has suggested we consider Eat My Lunch (EML) as an option for the children. She provided some information about the options. The committee were interested but had some follow-up questions:
- What about minimum numbers – would EML need some?
- How would payment options work? In advance? Directly?
- What about a special day once a term rather than every week?
ACTION: Vicki to forward these questions to Ruvini and will report back.
- Charities NZ: A subscription-based website for fundraising via social media. The committee declined the option to sign up.
Out: None.
Finance report (Sarah Polaschek)
Cheque $87,243.03
Term Deposit $0
Total $87,243.03
Need to action transferring funds to term deposit.
Still owe school $40,000 for funds for block 3 renovation. ACTION: Provide school with donation of $40,000 towards block 3 for extra costs not covered by Ministry of Education (outstanding).
GST
GST does not have to be paid on supplies (which for our purposes mean sales) that are exempt from GST. Donated goods sold by non-profit bodies are exempt from GST.
Registration for GST is only required where sales are $60,000 or more. For this year the accounts will show those sales which are the sale of donated goods and therefore not included in the $60,000 limit for registration.
The specific provisions of the GST Act are
- Section 51 requires you to register if supplies exceed $60k, or are likely to exceed $60k in next 12 months
- Section 2, taxable supplies are those where GST is charged
- Section 14, the sale of donated goods is exempt (i.e. not taxable). Note need to be a non-profit body.
(Further information can be found at www.ird.govt.nz/gst/additional-calcs/calc-spec-supplies/calc-exempt/calc-exempt.html#dgs)
School report (Anne Marie)
- Big pack up at the end of term 2 for the moves as a result of rooms 3 – 5 being finished.
- Keeping Ourselves Safe program has begun. How to be safe, confident, tackle different situations, some sexual health info for seniors.
- Green team: Pupils from senior school have started initiative: collecting up sushi trays for recycling. Also gathering up yoghurt ‘suckies’ for recycling. Have learned that Colgate toothpaste tubes can be recycled too. Student Council been supporting them.
- Junior team report:
- Learning full names, addresses and phone numbers. Encouraging memorising mobile phone numbers. Room 7, NE class has opened and is rapidly filling.
- Kids are getting agency from setting up new rooms.
- New video on the part of the website for beginning school (http://www.cashmere-ave.school.nz/for-parents/beginning-school-at-5). ‘Discovering our school’: https://drive.google.com/file/d/0B_aybkY71YIHTDJPbXNjRjBLM0U/view
- Avril McDonald, NZ author of The Feel Brave series of books, is visiting the school. The series of books aims to help children manage tough emotions and reach their potential covers self-confidence.
- Week 5 Juniors are off to Kilbirnie for a sports day.
Principal’s report (Kate)
- Block 3: great to have the top courtyard open again. Was a busy holiday season, completing the move of classrooms. Funding has covered a TV in each of the three rooms, a trolley for storing devices, and a TV station. Have bought some new furniture but waiting for the classes to get settled before make any further decisions. Still have some allocation for furniture.
- Blessing ceremony Tuesday afternoon for the three rooms. Eugene Ryder, a parent, coming in to do that. Mike Forrest will also be attending.
- ERO last week. Board and leaders presented to ERO on Monday. On Tuesday and Wednesday three reviewers were in, focussing on the leadership of school. Very interested in what school does for priority students. Noted that the school culture is very supportive, as is the community. Draft report due back within 20 working days for Board and leadership to review.
- Assemblies: feedback on arriving was that this would be one thing they’d change. Student Council conducted some research.
- Upcoming events:
- photos this week
- powhiri week 4 – would suggest getting a H&S rep along to talk about the committee
- Kapa haka festival planning is underway. Meeting every Wednesday at the moment.
- Student Council have approached Kate about beautifying the school. Will be reporting back in 2 weeks’ time with some ideas. Could be an opportunity for partnership between H&S and Student Council. They’ve been discussing creating a mural, and maybe some planting.
General business
- Kapa haka festival: first meeting of the food and beverages stall holders tomorrow at 7.30pm. Had a good response; key fair personnel have signed up. Stalls will be under verandahs of rooms 3 – 5 and across the top court, but planning for poor weather. Room 6 is also available. Mojo has confirmed. Aiming for sausage sizzle, bacon butties, home baking, café.
- Fundraising activities for this term:
Calendar artwork. To be completed by 30 August, ahead of student-led conferences.
Bake sale. Might hold it earlier in the term so it doesn’t get in the way of the kapa haka festival.
Term 4 will be disco, ice block day, and olive oil. - Robyn Sullivan’s middle son, Toby, has been diagnosed with bone cancer. Is there anything the H&S could do to help out? A bake sale was proposed, with potential for raffles. ACTION: Katie and Sonia to liaise. Other fundraising options were discussed but there was agreement that there was a risk that more significant fundraising activities done by the H&S may create a precedent that we could find hard to manage in the future. However, the H&S offered to support other fundraising activities organised by people independently.
- H&S quiz. General support but finding a date might be tricky. Tentatively scheduled for 10 or 17 November. ACTION: Allie to investigate further.
Meeting closed 8.52pm.
Next Meeting: 7.30pm Monday, 28 August2017.
