NEAT and UUCPA

DEAR UUCPA,

THANK YOU to UUCPA for choosing Interfaith Movement for Human Integrity as your June Justice Partner!   UUCPA congregants have jumped in to immigrant justice through participation in our Nueva Esperanza Accompaniment Teams program and Friends Afuera programs.  Below you will find more information about our programs and how UUCPA has been involved.  We encourage you to consider getting involved in any way that works well for you!

UUCPA Testimonials:

Q:  “Why did you decide to accompany Gregorio in the NEAT Program?”

Accompaniment FAQ:

Q: What is NEAT?

Interfaith Movement for Human Integrity’s Nueva Esperanza Accompaniment Teams (NEAT) program trains congregations to form an accompaniment team to walk alongside recently arrived immigrants during their first 6 months-1 year resettling.  We target accompanying individuals and families who do not already have a support system, so that our accompaniment team can help fill that gap and become their support system.  Each team of five volunteers supports newcomers’ self-sufficiency by introducing them to local resources.  Resources can include: legal, housing, employment, financial, and social resources.  They can also accompany them to appointments and participate in outings to strengthen connections and social, emotional, physical, and spiritual supports.  By working toward families’ goals together, we create sanctuary, safety, and friendship in community.

Q: Who does NEAT accompany?

Q:  What is Friends Afuera?

Interfaith Movement for Human Integrity’s Friends Afuera (friends on the outside) program matches volunteers with immigrants in detention so they have friends on the outside.  Volunteers commit to writing letters to them at least once a month and donate $30/month to their commissary so they can purchase essential items such as soap that the detention centers do not provide.  In this way, they provide them hope and a sense of dignity by being connected with someone who cares about them on the outside.

Q:  How are you responding to COVID-19?

We have an emergency fund that in benefiting the families we work with, and are organizing to release immigrants from detention to protect their health.  Upon release, we are linking them with empty congregational spaces in the Bay Area where they can self-quarantine for two weeks before returning to their families.
