to celebrate our fountains of joy
to hold each other through storms of grief
to guide one another through rapids of transformation
to rest together on ponds of stillness.
Together, we honor the spirit of water, its many forms, and its life-giving essence.

On the 25th Anniversary of September 11th
In the name of all that we hold Holy,
guided by an abundance of Love,
help us lean into one another,
across communities and memory and faiths,
to make of this anniversary a time of remembrance,
of learning, of reconnection and repair.
Let the meaning of this day be defined
by those whose lives were forever changed by it,
as we work to resist and disrupt narratives of hate
once again surging against beloved kin.
Today may we make time to mourn, and to reflect
on all that led up to 9-11 and all that has been waged in its name.
May we remind one another of what it means
to center love and justice in our daily living,
and may we find ways to make our everyday choices a living prayer.
We do this in community, to renew our hope for the future and our commitment to our shared values. We do this as a people of faith.

Love is the power that holds us together and is at the center of our shared values. The values we share include all the following, which we hold as inseparable and deeply interconnected:
Interdependence: We honor the interdependent web of all existence and acknowledge our place in it.
Pluralism: We are all sacred beings, diverse in culture, experience, and theology.
Justice: We work to be diverse multicultural Beloved Communities where all feel welcome and can thrive.
Transformation: We adapt to the changing world.
Generosity: We cultivate a spirit of gratitude and hope.
Equity: We declare that every person is inherently worthy and has the right to flourish with dignity, love, and compassion.

Today, you join in membership. This is a moment of excitement and possibility. And although I don’t wish to pull you out of this moment, I need to talk to you for a bit about a moment in your future.
There will come a time when we are not a community of excitement and possibility that is your true home. There will come a moment when you do not fit, and we disappoint you.
Memorize the feelings you have in this moment, because you will need them months from now or years from now. You will need them in the broken-hearted moment to come, when you realize that we, together, are not all that you thought we were.
You will not fit. If every one of us fit, we would not be called to grow. This religion is not a thing you join, it is a thing you are called to co-create.
So prepare now, for when we break one another’s hearts. Know what will carry you through that, and know who will carry you through that. Be ready. Hold on to this moment, and this memory, for that time in the future when you are ready to turn away.
Your moment of re-membership will be one of the most precious parts of your journey as a Unitarian Universalist. Today, plant the seeds in your heart that will prepare you for it.
Unitarian Universalists do not have all the answers. What we share is a curiosity to ask the questions. Here at UUCB, we invite members to share the journey together to a greater understanding. Grounding our path in love and responsible action.

The Water Communion Ritual
In 1980, two women—Carolyn McDade and Lucile Schuck Longview, wanted to create a new ritual “that spoke to our connectedness to one another, to the totality of life, and to our place on this planet.” They included a new, inclusive symbol of women’s spirituality: water.
They write, “Water is more than simply a metaphor. It is elemental and primary, calling forth feelings of awe and reverence. —it is the womb of life—and that amniotic waters surround each of us prenatally, [this worship service] was for us a new story of creation… We choose water as our symbol of our empowerment.”
Members bring to the service a small amount of water from a place that is special to them., people one by one pour their water together into a large bowl, the person who brought it tells why this water is special to them. The combined water is symbolic of our shared faith coming from many different sources.
At UUCB, we add that to our legacy water, sharing our history and our present
