717 Delaware Garage Transponder Installation Instructions
Because of space constraints, the 717 Delaware Garage is not equipped with contract card readers or license plate readers. Instead, it requires use of a transponder to enter and exit. Contact parking@umn.edu for information about transponders for use at the 717 Delaware Garage.
Plan the Installation
The tag must be correctly installed on the windshield interior to function. The tag’s chip will not function if the tag is mounted on a visor, card, or other temporary location.
- Once the tag is installed, it cannot be repositioned or moved without rendering it nonfunctional.
- Install the tag when the windshield’s temperature is above 50°F. If necessary, warm your windshield with the vehicle’s defroster.
- If you think your vehicle may have a metallized windshield, contact parking@umn.edu for assistance before proceeding.
- Identify the optimal tag location:
- If your rear view mirror is mounted to the windshield, locate the tag approximately 1” below the rear view mirror mount and center the tag on the windshield behind the rear view mirror. See Figure 1 below.
- If your rear view mirror is mounted to the header, measure down approximately 4” from the top edge of the interior windshield and center the tag on the windshield behind the rear view mirror. See Figure 1 below.
Install the Tag
- Clean and dry the area of the interior windshield where the tag will be installed with glass cleaner and paper towels.
- Hold the tag so that the release liner is facing you. Locate the release tab on the upper right corner of the tag. Work the tab back and forth a few times to loosen it. Slightly pull the tab and bend it toward you to detach the tab, peel the release liner, and expose the adhesive.
Note: This tag features a double release liner. When the release liner is removed, the surface of the tag should feel sticky. Before installing the tag, be sure that the release liner is completely removed and that the adhesive is exposed.
- With the adhesive side facing toward the windshield but not touching the glass, move the tag to the desired location, and then press one edge to the glass.
- Adhere the tag to the glass by rubbing your thumb up and down in a zigzag motion across the entire tag surface as shown below.. Be sure to rub over the tag’s chip to remove as much air as possible.
- Step outside of your vehicle and look at the tag through the windshield.
Your tag is installed and ready for use.
Remove the Tag
If you need to remove the tag from your windshield, peel off the tag starting at one corner, then clean any adhesive residue remaining on the windshield using isopropyl alcohol. Discard the used tag.
Once you remove the tag, you cannot reuse it. The cost of a replacement tag is $20.00.
