BRIEF HISTORY

Coton Bowls Club was founded in 1919 with money given to the village for setting up recreational facilities for soldiers returning from the Great War.

Along with many bowls clubs it is situated on the corner of the recreation green. At the time of the founding of the club, the green was in the corner of a farmers field. The field was subsequently bequeathed to the village as a 'recreation ground specifically for the use and enjoyment of the children of the village'. Well the older village residents and people from the surrounding villages who are bowls club members are certainly using 'our corner' for pleasure and enjoyment.

It started with just two rinks, as was common then. The green was extended to four rinks, then extended again by 1960 to the present six rinks each time taking a little bit extra from the recreation ground.

Our current clubhouse was built by club members; it was opened by the President, Horace Silk, on 5 May 1973.  In the late 1990s a verandah was added giving a covered area for spectators to sit and enjoy the game in more sheltered conditions.

The clubhouse and surrounding area is maintained by a small band of 'willing volunteers' and following a very generous donation, our new changing room, which is dedicated in memory of a past bowler Yvone Duckworth, was opened in our Centenary year . The kitchen area of the clubhouse was updated in the subsequent closed season and no doubt more jobs will follow in future closed seasons. Grateful thanks are recorded here for the work carried out by the 'willing volunteers' and all those unsung heroes without whom this club (in line with many others) would not survive.
