Alec Insights from Vicious Syndicate
Alec Dawson popped into the VS podcast this week, go give it a listen! Here are the highlights:
- Control decks/game length
- Control is not dead in their eyes, but it's not in play as much as it could be
- Want control styled decks to have win conditions that aren't just infinite removal
- Hints at them setting up towards new control style decks in the near future
- Questline should have advantage over Control
- Oftentimes if they want to push a card but it's too slow, they often can just nerf it by a mana and adjust the stats. Downside of it is you start getting cards at 4 and 5 mana doing effects initially meant for 6 or 7 mana cards, which can speed things up, and it's something the dev team is currently actively fighting against
- They really enjoy questlines because they're single card buildarounds, and it means they can also open up some of the expansion design space to create other archetypes that need multiple new cards for support
- Negative feedback surrounds the inevitability some of the questlines can bring, but they've slowed down via recent balance changes.
- Early nerfs were things they already were considering prelaunch (specifically Incanter's Flow and Il'gynoth. they knew the Questlines designed for those classes meant people were going to play those cards), but they wanted to let things play out first before making adjustments.
- They don't want you going into a match, seeing a specific class, and feeling like you need to concede on the spot
- If a deck is very polarizing, they'll definitely look at it, but it's not the be all end all for balance adjustments
- Tech cards can help counter polarizing matchups, and right now tech cards are at somewhat of a low. "Expect more tech cards in the near future"
- Tech cards don't have to be "hard" counters like Kobold Stickyfingers, and can be more soft counters in things like Ogremancer and Cult Neophyte

The New Meta is Here!
What’s good, what’s bad, what is going on!?
- One thing I find super interesting and that echoes what we’ve been saying about tournament decks, but GM decks are not doing well on ladder! (Anacondra Druid, Garrote Rogue, Felrattle DH is the best of the bunch but still Tier 2, to name a few)
- Kinda yeah! Though also the ladder is SO different based on where you are - and it's so varied that it's hard to even share experiences with similar mmr
- At least in terms of popularity, Quest Mage is the thing that you will hear about - it's the most popular deck in the game, especially in high diamond but really throughout ladder. But there are a lot of other decks seeing play
- Aggro Druid, Quest Mage, Quest Warrior, Face Hunter, Garrote Rogue, and Elemental Shaman have most games since the patch (Diamond-Legend) - right behind those are all three Paladins
- In terms of winrate, D-L's decks since the patch is Aggro Druid, DRDH, Libram Pally, Ele Shaman, Secret Pally. And not Quest Mage until the bottom of Tier 2.
- Aggro Druid
- Pretty good across the board, but does not like mages
- Doesn't hate them, but isn't the ideal matchup for sure
- I think we can safely call this the best deck
- It's not very good, but it's very popular and is somehow defining the minimum speed of the format
- Let's talk about our feelings
- Three pirate buffs have allowed warrior to work its way into the meta
- Multiple Warrior decks btw
- Doesn’t like warriors which are increasing in popularity
- Libram, Secret (most popular), Handbuff
- Quest Warlock and Shaman have dropped way off in popularity

Do you think Blizzard will ever consider the idea of banning problematic Neutral cards only in the offending class when that is the case? A recent example is Crystalizer in Warlock for wild. This would allow the card to continue to be used at its intended base power-level in other classes/strategies. If it’s only a problem in one class, why take it away from everyone else?

Greetings Terse Tur-duc-ken,
After hearing a LOT of mercenaries talk, I think that it is suffering from what I call the Star Wars problem. The first Star Wars came out with little to no expectations. It was amazing and took people by surprise.
Cut to 2017 a new Star Wars goes into production and for a year prior we read about who’s directing it, who’s cast (thereby spoiling surprise appearances) and so on. By the time it’s out a lot of fans have already decided how they feel about it.
Battlegrounds came by surprise, was amazing, and took the Hearth-world by storm. Mercenaries on the other hand was announced, talked about, MARKETED, it incrementally drip feed revealed, without us knowing what it could be. I agree with you that it’s been a misstep to try to monetize it before we know what it is. But now it feels picked apart and it hasn’t even launched yet.
So I will say that I’m in the Hat camp: I’ll wait to play it, and I’ll wait to spend money on it just yet.
Thanks for great shows!
