CL SIG Meetings 2023/24          Page  of

22/05/23, 7pm

Present: Adrian Hamilton, David Thornley, Andrew Robinson,  Danny Walker, Gerald Wimmer. Kevin Barnes

Agenda worked through:

1)Approve expenses payment to Rob Wallace for NATS grass mower. Alreadypaid.

2) Decide if we need to do anything about the fence around the hard circle.

Adrian will investigate identity tags etc. for the fence. DT to compose an email to send to Carterton grounds requesting them to ask us first if they want to use the fence. Send email to committee for approval first.

3) Progress CL wings badge (or not)

Agreed that the first step is to update the COP as required. Adrian and Kevin to work on this.

4) Delegated approval to the Treasurer to pay expenses up to $500.

Approved.

5)  2.4 Ghz throttle control for sports flying.

Agreed that this is OK for sport flying. Competition rule changes would need a remit.

6) Shut offs for monoline speed

Adrian will investigate 2 4Ghz shut off for speed and also general application of this for competition miodels, Also check the use does not clash with other codes.

7) Growing interest in carrier flying and possible use of Australian (LARC'S?) rules here.

General discussion on this. Adrian and Gerald to get a general Facebook discussion going to gauge interest and decide on possible flying rules.

 AOB

8) Adrian would like to review:

Meet closed 7.59pm.

12/09/23, 7.30pm

Present: Adrian Hamilton (part), David Thornley, Andrew Robinson, Danny Walker.

Apologies: Kevin Barnes, Gerald Wimmer

1) 2024 Nats programme review.

Andrew R proposed that Day 1 and day 2 CL events are transposed, thus putting                 F2D before slow combat and allowing adequate time for both events.

Also start Classic Stunt at 8.30am (if allowed by noise restrictions) on day 1 to                         ensure a reasonable finish time before aggregate.

For those flying both slow combat and Classic, OD to consider placing slow combat                 pilots earlier in the classic draw to allow them to finish earlier.

DT to amend programme and publish to SIG committee for comment.

2) AGM

3) Prize giving.

4) Grass Mowing

5) May Minutes review.

DT Letter sent to A & P secretary re circle fence. No response so far. Follow up in mid September.

Review notes from Adrian for the various items 3) thro 8):

1. Plastic prop rule changes:

Discussed the various class rules in person and on FB and CLNZ. Consensus was to remove the "over the counter in NZ" requirement from Classic TR to future proof for reducing availability.

Next actions: Submit a remit on this alongside any other remits to come in the near future (combat).

2. Refresh the CL Code with Kevin:

Have reviewed, prepared a first draft of changes to be sent to Kevin for his input.

Next actions: Prepare a second draft incorporating Kevin's feedback and share to the SIG and then the membership for feedback.

3. Wings Badge options:

Have made notes in the CL Code review on possible CL Wings criteria

Next actions: Refine criteria on completion of the CL Code update and submit to SIG for feedback.

4. Navy Carrier introductory proposal:

Have reviewed overseas rules with Gerald and prepared a basic variant suited to local circumstances and goals. NB, this is only intended to spur coordinated activity at a club level, not necessarily to introduce a new national class.

Next actions: Consult with Gerald again. Publish the proposal for member discussion feedback.

5. Shutoffs and throttles with 2.4 GHz RC:

No restrictions on using RC for shutoffs in CL classes, but the MFNZ General Rules and Members' Handbook require control to be "through the lines" and by the pilot only.

Next actions: Update those documents to allow 2.4GHZ control of non-elevator functions and possibly to allow pit crew or instructors to control throttle for training, contest or safety purposes. Probably doesn't need a remit, just SIG confirmation as it's more of an oversight from a previous remit.

6. Kevlar leadouts and Spectra/Dyneema lines:

CL rules allow these, but the MFNZ General Rules and Members' Handbook require steel lines and fixtures.

Next actions: Update those documents to allow for Spectra/Dyneema, Yatsenko style handles and possibly kevlar leadouts with whatever necessary mitigations against fraying or embrittlement.

7. Clareville Fence Panel Security:

Have a way to wire them together, but the email offering to loan them to the A&P Society makes that redundant. Weatherproof ID tags or signage are so far proving surprisingly expensive to serve 40 fence panels.

Next actions: Find a more affordable signage option.

8. Slow Combat rules update:

Discussions at the Shortest Day showed interest in formalising the ad hoc use of the 30/10 speed limit from the original 1997 unofficial Slow Combat rules. There probably needs to be a tidy-up of the whole combat section in the rule book as it retains paragraphs relevant to deleted classes and still references F2D scoring and other rules that aren't actually used these days.

Next actions: Decide whether to remit the 30/10 speed limit by itself before the Nats, or do a full combat section update. Also decide whether to retain the second speed limit with a streamer and the speed check at the start of the match (which is rarely performed) or go back to the overall limit with speed checks on request. Define the penalty for breaking the speed limit. Incorporate McKenzie scoring system.

6) Notes from Kevin re world champs;

I won’t be there tonight so here is a quick world champs update:

F2D

F2B

So for noting – but I would appreciate endorsement of Rob W as potential team manager

7) F2D Flyaways.

After the interest shown by MFNZ in the flyaways of 2022 and 2023 we need to ensure that the shut off tests and double line pull tests proposed by Bryce are implemented in 2024. Bryce to confirm?

8) DT to ask MFNZ if the there exists a formal written agreement between MFNZ and Carterton A & P for the CL circle. Would be dated approx late 1987 or early 1988. (Circle was laid October 1988)

Meet closed at 8.30pm. Next meeting November.

07/11/23, 7.30 pm, using MFNZ account.

Present: Adrian Hamilton, David Thornley,   Danny Walker, Gerald Wimmer.

Apologies: Andrew Robinson

12/09/23 minutes worked through:

1) Complete

2) Correct location on MFNZ programme

3) Prize Giving.

David T will collect the awards during the week and hand to Danny, who will then take to         the PG and chase up Phil E for the printed cards.

4) Complete.

5) Fence letter response received. A & P show accept contents.

Items 5.1, 5.2, 5.3, 5.4, 5.6 are all WIP

Item 5.5 to be discussed at the NATS AGM plus any other 5.x items relevant.

5.7 Adrian will take his wire to the NATS.

5.8 Need to discuss this with Bryce. No chance to do anything before the NATS.(unless he comes to the TECT meet and meets up with Adrian)

7) David to remind Bryce of the slow combat speed limit and the need for shut-offs and testing of them at the NATS

8) Paul Clegg was asked about any agreement he copied Kevin B and Frazer B. KB’s response was.

“Hi, yes i know all about it there is no agreement except for a verbal one some time back between the A & P and control line.”

Note; This response was not found until after the meet had closed.

New Items

1) CD’s for the events have not been positively nailed down. The NATS schedule is showing Danny as the organiser for everything, possibly because he is listed as the first CL contact person.

2) The awards and text have been arranged as last year. Note that we dropped off awards for FAI F2C last year.

DT to check that all CL event CD’s are in place and check the awards.

3) F2b intermediate is a sub class of F2b and a pilot cannot enter both (it is possible on the NATS on line entry)  DT to put out a note to confirm this.

Meet closed about 8.15 pm

Next meeting after NATS
