Procedure
90 Minute Class Period
With your assigned partner, review your responses to the following questions (students recorded answers prior to this lesson):
- How do we differentiate poetic forms?
- What is the different between poetry and prose?
- How are poems used in everyday life?
- What do I know about poetry?
- How are poems organized?
- What techniques do poets use to help readers visualize text?
- How are emotions communicated in poetry?
- How can a voice/body be used to convey the mood and tone of a poem?
- What are poetic devices? How are poetic devices used to engage readers?
After you review these questions, select ONE popular song that you believe has a poetic qualities and record your response to the “why this song” question on Music and Poetry Outline for Students.
You will use Google Tools share your analysis of a popular piece of music. As a pair, create a Google Slides presentation for your song, send it to another team for a peer review using the share feature in Google Drive. Review the feedback you receive from your peers, revise and edit your work, and post your finalize presentation to Google Classroom. Use the Google Form to sign up for a presentation time.

In your presentation, you should include the following:
- Present the song’s lyrics and music (you may use YouTube)
- Provide brief biographical information on the song writer(s) or group.
- Provide a detailed explanation of the song’s meaning making references to parts of the song that support your interpretation, being sure to include identification of the speaker, tone, theme and significance of title of your song in this discussion.
- Identify at least two various figures of speech or poetic devices located in the song’s lyrics (use your list of poetic terms!).
- Include graphics that visually represent your song and illustrate the poetic devices you have chosen to discuss
