Champion of Champions
I enjoyed playing dodgeball in my spare time so I asked my mum to sign me up to a
dodgeball team. The games were like any other normal dodgeball game until one day the dodgeball
instructor said that we have been offered to join a dodgeball championship tournament to
play against international teams! My heart was struck with excitement but a hint of fear got
to me. I’ve never heard of a dodgeball tournament! ‘What if we’re not good enough to play
against the other teams?’ I kept asking myself questions in my head. I was not going to let
fear get in the way of this opportunity!
For many days, the dodgeball teams practiced and practiced until we were impossible to beat. It was the
first day of the tournament and we were versing an Australian dodgeball team. An audience watched as
balls flung around the room, here and there! Shouting and cheering slashed through the awkward silence! It
only took me 2 shots to take out 3 people. It was not the feeling of pride, but a feeling of enthusiasm
rushing to the surface of my body. The first round had ended. It was settled. 19-7. We were the winners of
round one! There was still plenty of days to go on. Anything could go wrong...
Second day of the tournament, I could not wait to play again. We were going against a
Korean team. The bell rang for us to start, balls continued to fly around the room, some
accidentally bursting into the audience. 3 people from our team were out, but 9 people from the other team
were out as well. The sound of supportive screams echoed through the hall, and many balls
hit many children but finally we had won. We were almost undefeatable!
Days and days went by, we kept winning and finally after so much practice and dodgeball
games, we made it to the finals. It was the most scarce and serious team in the tournament.
It was the last round, what could possibly have gone wrong? We had already beaten tons of
international dodgeball champions.
The bell rung again! But at first, no balls were being flung, it was only a matter of time until
screaming rang out the silence once again, but I was wrong. After 5 minutes of complete silence, each
player took one ball and threw it at the other team! I figured that the other team had been
waiting for us to make the first attack before trying to defeat us. My dodgeball group had almost been done for! This really was a hard round to beat... only a few minutes remained until it’s game over! What could I do to put an end to this? I thought again
I threw the remaining balls all over the place, here and there they bounced, as well as dodging the other balls that could possibly have broken my bones. Luckily I was able to hit a few of the remaining opponents before the bell rang again. I didn’t realize how many points we had gotten until I had looked at the scoreboard. 29-16! I was so proud of how my team and I had won by working together. We shook hands with the other teams and as my team broke up to go home, the instructor each gave us a trophy. As I arrived back home, I explained and talked about what had happened over the days of the tournament. My parents were as proud as I was! The sun had set, but it was not over. There are plenty more dodgeball tournaments to be won and lost. I think, as the sun sets over the horizon behind the trees. It was a well played tournament. I was but a champion of champions.
