Education:

  • Mathematics Education, B.S., 1993, St. Cloud State University
  • Educational Leadership, M.Ed., 1997, South Dakota State University
  • Mathematics Education, Ph.D., 2001, University of Minnesota

Goals as MCTM Vice President for Higher Ed:

As MCTM’s vice president of higher education my goals are to work with other MCTM leaders to provide a great spring conference to promote mathematics education in Minnesota. I will continue promoting MCTM, and the annual spring conference, in my work in northern Minnesota. I would also like to see other opportunities to promote and support improving mathematics education in our state and getting more teachers to join MCTM.

Professional Affiliations:

Minnesota Council of Teachers of Mathematics

National Council of Teachers of Mathematics

International Group for the Psychology of Mathematics Education

Association of Mathematics Teacher Educators

Involvement with MCTM and Mathematics Education:

I started my mathematics education career teaching high school in Watertown, South Dakota. While teaching I worked on my master’s degree in the evenings and summers. I received an evaluation training fellowship at the University of Minnesota to complete a PhD in mathematics education and work on evaluating educational programs. Since graduating I have been a professor at Bemidji State teaching mathematics and education courses. I have enjoyed attending the MCTM spring conference since the late 1990’s when I moved back to Minnesota. Since moving to Bemidji I have been able to bring many of my students to their first MCTM conferences. I have been active with the CONNECT group at MCTM to welcome first time conference attendees to our spring conference. I also attend our national NCTM conference when I can.

Professionally I have published and presented research focused on elementary through college students. I have also had grants funded to support pre-service and in-service teacher professional development and training. My current project is an NSF grant to support undergraduate students to pursue careers in mathematics education. This grant will pay the full cost of attendance, support a learning community, and provide SEL training for future teachers and is a collaboration with community colleges and a local non-profit. This grant includes funding to bring these scholarship students to their first MCTM conference.

As a parent I want to help our children’s math teachers be the best they can be. This starts with getting our best and brightest students into the teaching field then supporting them with high quality professional development opportunities. As a professor I enjoy bringing my students to MCTM and volunteering them for the Tech Team to encourage them to become active members in our math community.

Current Position:

Full Professor of Mathematics at Metropolitan State University and Coordinator of the Math Teaching Program

Education:

  • Ph.D. in Mathematics University of Arizona 1997
  • M.S. in Electrical Engineering 1992
  • B.S. in Electrical Engineering 1987

Goals as MCTM Vice President for Higher Ed:

At Metropolitan State University, I currently advise and teach pre-service math teachers, teach accelerated graduate level math courses in the summers for in-service math teachers, and serve as a thesis advisor for the M.S. in Urban Education as needed.  I am very excited to be considered for the MCTM Vice-President of Higher Education position.  Teaching and making positive contributions to the math teaching profession are my passions.  As a member of the board, I would make it a priority to assist in promoting and carrying out current and future initiatives and provide a conduit for communication between higher ed and K-12 math educators. I have significant experience working throughout the Minnesota State system of colleges and universities with math faculty who serve diverse student populations.  I am able to use this experience to support MCTM in their goals of providing professional development resources that provide access and inclusion for a broad audience in the state of Minnesota.  MCTM is so important to the health of the math teaching profession by providing opportunities for math teachers to connect with one another, build community, and advance the profession.  It would be an honor to play a role in the MCTM.
