Higher than the sky

High Beam Activity

“Ok, you’re good to go!”. My right foot planted onto the rung. For some reason I wasn’t scared at all. Everyone cheered me on as I casually climbed up each rung. I had made it to the staples. “This is different,” I thought to myself. The space between the last rung and the first staple was large.

I huffed a big sigh and started climbing. The adrenaline kicked in as I reached the horizontal high beam. This was by far the most challenging part. My face turned red and sweat dripped down my face. I planted my left foot onto the horizontal beam, after my first foot was secure, I held tightly on the staple with my right arm to ensure my safety. I stepped onto the beam with my right foot. “Am I even secure?” I asked myself. It was as if my harnes and the rope were non-existent. I straightened my arms to begin. The cheering from my team gave me the courage to even go as far as I already was, let alone all the way!

The success from my other teammates had inspired me to complete the whole activity. After a few steps, I realized I was secure and before I knew it… I made it to the other end of the beam. “Tell the pole you love it!”. I giggled and hugged the pole. “I love you pole!” I screamed. The laughter of my team had echoed all the way up to the beam. “This isn’t so bad after all,” I said to myself as I laughed.

I calmly looked up and walked up to the middle point of the beam. “Do a dance!” said a female voice. Although I was embarrassed, I did it. My hands had begun a dance. I laughed my embarrassment away and finished the dance.

Before I knew it, I was on ground level. Sighing of relief, I made my way back to the seats with my trembling legs. I hoped that my success would inspire my group members to complete the activity.
