The explosion immediately killed an c.80,000 people; tens of thousands more later died of radiation. Three days later another A-bomb was dropped on Nagasaki, killing an estimated 40,000 people. The events that unfold shape the Cold War and international relations. We will examine the origins of the Cold War, key turning points such as the Cuban Missile Crisis and the impact of the Berlin Wall.
