Print Ad Analysis:
From this print advertisement, it is biased based on its theme, word selection and stereotypes toward women are also shown in the ad.
People thought women didn’t need to go to school, they just need to marry a man and take care of the family, this is the old concept to women. This would not be biased long time ago due to public’s thoughts to women because that’s what they thought.
This advertisement shows the social class of women during that time when hoover released this advertisement, Hoover is not closed yet, and all their advertisements show a lot of stereotypes.
This advertisement is extremely biased based on today’s view to gender, sexism advertisement, stereotypes toward gender are shown in this image.
Vague stereotypes are shown in the text, but it is not that obvious since it uses the third personal pronoun "she" and the image doesn't tell the receivers of this vacuum cleaner. However, there's an announcement or an extra information to the husbands, this shows that this advertisement is aiming for men, telling husbands to buy vacuum cleaners for their wives as a Christmas gift, this would be a great gift, but since it shows many stereotypes toward women it doesn't seem like a great gift anymore, this image shows women do all the housework, all they need is a vacuum cleaner and they will be satisfied, reversely, this also shows men work outside, they don't do housework, they just need to buy gifts for women because only women are expected to take care of household and do all the works at home.
Gender Bias:
This advertisement is stereotyped based on gender, gender stereotype is the ideas of what women and men should do and should not do, both of them are to be blamed, for example, women are expected to take care of all the households as this picture shows, there’s no education requirement for them as a person who only takes care of all the households and men are expected to profit the family and working outside, they need higher education requirement, these are the most-seen stereotypes occurred before.
In today’s world, we have seen a lot of new stereotypes toward genders, such as girls need to be beautiful and boys have to play sports, people stereotyped boys and girls due to these stereotypes toward gender and boys try to make themselves act like an ordinary“boy” and girls try to make themselves like an ordinary “girl”. However, these stereotypes does not personalize a person, stereotypes are not something that describe a person, the reason for why people also stereotype themselves or other people is they are afraid of being different than other people, so they do the same thing as most people do, therefore, they would be apart of the group.
Unconscious gender bias have grown in the society, people just think in that stereotyped way, female sports players or workers are paid unequally because people stereotyped them, thinking that male workers always do better.
This doesn’t mean men are not being stereotyped, men are also being stereotyped, but it is just unconscious, people barely realized, as I mentioned, men are expected to work, if would be weird if men take care of all the households instead of working, people would blame him for being a “not-working” dad, it seems like a common issue, according to data worldbank, there are 75 percent of male work and profit the whole family.
We all stereotype genders because the society grew from patriarchal society in which women are expected to be obedient and submissive all the time and men are expected to have the power and take control of the family. This made a gendered society today.
Women should not be expected to look beautiful and take care of the households, men should not be expected to keep working outside and be the most powerful person in the family, everyone should be treated equally in this society, the majority of gender bias is unconscious which means we have to actually start caring about unconscious gender bias more and break the stereotypes based on genders. These examples are just some most common examples, there are still many stereotypes about men and women, such as men don’t care about other people’s feelings, they let women do all the work at home, women care more about the family instead of job, friends, reversely, men care more about their jobs.
Pence tweets support for gay US Olympian who trashed him: 'We are FOR YOU' :
In this article, the author always put a screen capture under the quote, it is a proof and evidence to their quotes, the dialogue between two people are all quoted which means there’s no more things could be added except their original quotes. However the placement of this article could have arguments, the statements that are placed at the top of the articles and the bottom of the articles are more memorable, in the article, I can tell that the article actually supports Pence, an anti-gay politician which also shows Fox’s opinion to this event, on the top of the article, it uses “repeatedly” to describe how many times had Rippon criticized Pence, there’s bias based on word selection as well as placement because that is the first statement occurs in the article which is on the very top of the article. Before the article mentions about Rippon repeatedly critizeing Pence, it talks mentions about that Pence’s tweet sounds magnanimous, this made a big contrast between Pence and Rippon.
In this article, most biases are shown based on word selection, such as “repeatedly”, which is also biased based on statistic control, the statement “sharp contrast” which occurs in the sentence “The positive Twitter messages drew a sharp contrast with Rippon’s posts on the same platform.” and the statement which shows Rippon has “bad blood”.etc. There are still many biases are shown in this article, I can tell that most of those are directed against Rippon, it would affect the audience a lot from how the article describes his attitude to Pence especially when it states that he has criticized Pence “repeatedly”, it makes people think he really has the bad blood against anti-gay politician, even though it does, I don’t think it is a bad thing. However, this article makes him sounds bad.
There’s a important detail about Donald Trump, the author uses Rippon’s statement to finish the article. “Rippon told USA Today. "He seems more mild-mannered than Donald Trump.” Even though this statement is from Rippon, but this statement barely related to the article, it is not necessary. This statement only makes the readers dislike Donald Trump. From this article, I can tell that this article actually stands on
Mike Pence's side more than Rippon, from the placement of statements,
Word selection and the way it describes both of them, Mike Pence in this article sounds like he is magnanimous and more mild-mannered.
this article also works against Donald Trump, as the last statement mentions, "He seems more mild-manner than Donald Trump" Its placement is also biased, the top statements and the last one are often memorable, Fox news put the quote from Rippon at the end of this report "He seems more mild-mannered than Donald Trump" this obviously shows a stereotype against Donald Trump also shows Mike Pence is a better anti-gay politician at the same time, the placement of this statement also shows that.
Bias or opinions are often hidden in news articles, the authors would not show their opinions to the event directly, instead, they would find the other ways to show their opinions, for example, they would use statements from other people or they would use word that doesn’t seem biased to describe an event or a person. First, the way that this news article shows bias is to use statements from other people, and placed them based on their opinion to the event, In this article, the author uses a technique of placement, the article shows Pence’s tweets which are described as “magnanimous notes” then it shows Rippon’s tweet, how he refused Pence’s invitation, before it shows his tweets, it describes that Rippon’s tweets drew a sharp contrast. Secondly, the author would describe the person based his/her own opinions, most are shown in word selection, after describing a person or an event, the author would show “evidence” to support his/her ideas which made the article becomes more reliable, For instance, in this article, the author first describes the difference between Pence’s tweets and Rippon’s tweets and there’s a big contrast between Pence’s tweets and Rippon’s, the author shows their tweets after, this would make the readers feel that this article is more reliable.
This article portraits Kim Jong Un badly by using examples and statements from other people, the article adds an image of Kim Jong Un which shows his excitement, based on how it portraits Kim Jong Un, the image only makes this person sounds more evil.
I think this article is also lacking multiple points of view, It seems like it wants to show people their opinion by using opinions or statements from other people/sources.
Its placement of stories is also biased, there are more negative statements about Kim Jong Un on the top of the article, top stories are often more important, because of this, the negative statements about something would often stay in people’s mind.
This article could cause many arguments based on how it reports about North korea and NBC news because holt was giving a cheery message about North Korea’s ski resort, which is propaganda. However, if Fox news report either negatively or positively and show its opinion toward North Korea and NBC news, then it would be biased, in this article, I can tell that Fox News shows more negative statements toward North Korea and NBC news based on the way it describes them, for example, “NBC reporter Holt was “slammed” on social media.”
This is focused on North Korea’s new ski resort and propaganda news from NBC news, same as the last article, the article is biased by placement of stories and word selection, these two are the most seen issues in both articles.
Even though it has provided multiple points of view to North Korea using quotes and opinions from other people, but the author also describes about the event in his/her own way, so the author would make the effect of making the reader feel in the same way as how the author wants them to feel. When people or this article provides multiple points of view to North Korea, the author would describe about that person, decides whether if that person is a reliable source so people would not actually feel in the opposite way as the author wants us to feel. For example, in this article, a person named Pak provided opinions to North Korea’s new ski resort, and the author describes about her detaily which makes her sounds really reliable, when Dennis Rodman, provided his opinion to Kim Jong Un, claiming that Kim Jong Un is actually good and how he wants to change his legacy, the article describes him as an unreliable source, the author stated he has visited North Korea repeatedly and he is a former NBA player, the author just stated these unclear facts, especially the word “repeatedly” would make the readers think he visited North Korea more than the actual number, for example, if he only visited there twice, but the word “repeatedly” actually sounds more than “2”.
From these details, I can tell that Fox News supports Pak’s opinions more than Dennis Rodman, secondly, Dennis Rodman support North Korea, from this statement, I can tell that Fox news dislikes Kim Jong Un and the author think it is not a “modern” ski resort as NBC news mentioned earlier, saying North Korea’s ski resort is a modern ski resort with cheery tongue.
I viewed the article as a reader instead of bias detector first, as a reader, the article made make me dislike Kim Jong Un and the way he control his people, autocratic rules.etc. because its source control, the author only uses Dennis Rodman’s statements as a positive statements to Kim Jong Un. However, Dennis Rodman is not as reliable as Pak, a professional political analyzer, so this article is also biased by its source control, statements from Pak are mostly negative and statements from Dennis Rodman are all positive messages about Kim Jong Un.
The U.S and North korea are hostile which means this article would be extremely biased, the author influenced by NBC’s propaganda report, at the same time, the author could also wrote about North Korea’s new ski resort and the recent years relations between the U.S and North Korea, the way the author hide biases in this article is kind of similar as the last one, they all use statements from other people, some only provides one side of view to something, in this article, the author did provide multiple points of view to Kim Jong Un. However, some statements are not reliable, which means this article could be biased based on word control, placement, statistic control as well as source control, bias based on source control is the least obvious, but it has the biggest impact to the readers, readers would barely believe in Dennis Rodman’s statements especially when the author stated he is just a former NBA player and he has visited North Korea repeatedly. This technique is effective because most people would not realize that it is biased, I didn’t realize it is biased either at the beginning, because source control are often harder to be realized, and the article uses quotes from other people which would make it sounds fair and unbiased.
Political Stereotypes:
Political stereotypes rarely occur in our life during this age. However, it is everywhere on the internet and social media. Every politician has his/her own way to control the government, they all their own concepts, due to different opinions or idealistic thinking, it creates arguments, and controversial topics, citizens would have their own opinions the government, they would start a protest, which would be reported on the news, likewise, they would also say it on social media, it causes friction between people because people who support the idea and people who don’t would start an argument which means the government and social media should try to reduce the stereotypes. For example, I’ve found a website that is similar to YouTube named bilibili, videos about politics are not allowed to post, this is a great way for reducing friction between people and also the government would not be stereotyped.
Here are the most common stereotypes I’ve heard about on social media and through conversations with friends:
Compare and Contrast
News media bias has been a hot topic lately, In this project, we referenced 5 different types of media, which is news articles, ads, commercials, songs and tv shows. Each of them have shown biases or stereotypes in various ways. I chose an aged advertisement to analyze, therefore, I could also see the differences between Traditional media and New media. Since the print ad is extremely biased based on gender, it shows how differently the way they measure “bias” differently, as I mentioned, News media bias has been a hot topic today, people start caring more about media bias, trying to stop impacting the society. However, the media haven’t become less biased, they just hide biases and stereotypes, unlike the print ad, it shows stereotype directly toward women or maybe they didn’t think this would be a “stereotype”, traditional media and new media both have different concepts of “bias” and “stereotype” because the Print Ad actually sounds serious, it is actually telling husbands to buy a vacuum cleaner for their wives, it doesn’t seem like they did this on purpose, trying to show stereotypes intentionally toward women, it seems like they didn’t think it is stereotyped and thought it was normal that women didn’t need to work except taking care of the house. The shampoo commercial also shows bias based on gender, but the reason for why I think the Print ad and Old Spice commercial are still different is because the different types of primary purpose of the content, Old Spice commercial is also advertising but it also seems like an entertainment video because the last scene of the commercial. The weird ending transition and the way he talk, his tone makes the video looks hilarious.
Style and techniques used in news articles are different than others, it’s usually harder to detect bias from a regular news article.
Some common ways used in both articles are word selection, placement of stories and source control, the author added strong words or unclear statistic to describe something. They would also change the placement of stories, such as putting a negative statement of something or someone as the beginning of the article, so people would think that is the topic and what the article is focusing on.
News articles does not like other media, they just add little details by using some techniques to represent their bias on the articles and it is actually more effective because it convinces people if something seems more trustworthy. For instance, if a scientific report discussing about the benefits of playing games and an essay from a random student discussing about the benefits of playing games, which sounds more reliable? The scientific report would definitely be the choice. However, it is actually biased because it only tells you the benefits of playing games.
News articles have the same effects as the “scientific report” it seems trustworthy, but we don’t know about the production of the article, which means every news article has potential to be biased. Other media such as songs and print ad, there’s no little details added to make the content seems unbiased but is actually biased.
Similarities:
The similarity between news articles and TV show is that both of them hide stereotypes and bias, the techniques they used are pretty similar, the TV show uses dialogue between people to represent stereotypes, for example, the elder daughter is always the smartest and she fixes every situations. These are discovered from the dialogue between family members. The technique of apply dialogues is also used in news articles, but the author would also change its placement or source control of the dialogue, for example, if two people are arguing about something, the author would quote what they said and can’t not change it, but the author can describe their personal backgrounds instead in which the person the author is describing could sounds really reliable or unreliable.

From 2:00 to 4:10 | The older brother alway argue with his family, this shows a stereotype toward boys during puberty, they argue with parent or elders. However, the girl doesn’t argue, she is always the smartest and leads her brothers and sisters to a right direction. |

11:44 | The usage of characters in this TV show is kind of unbalanced, what I noticed from this video is, asians agents all work under a cantankerous and vindictive asian boss. Black |
14:15 | The sister fixes the issue between family members again. In this video, KC is always the leader of her family, the smartest and affable. This shows a stereotype based on age, different age thinking, the elder kids are always the ones who do the right things for their families. |
20:31 | His dad was pretending to support his son on hanging out with girl. 0:40 Lyrics | He raps about gay marriage, since 1:00, the lyrics start talks about parent though they could be cured with treatments and religions. However, what he wants to represent from this scene is that gays can not be cured by religious treatments. |
1:30 MV | A homosexual teen was picked while playing truth or dare, he was fear to tell other people his sexual orientation. They were afraid to tell the truth of being gay, because they want to be apart of the group. |
1:50 MV | His parent are trying to cure him but he refused them pointedly. It shows that parent care too much about whether if their kids are homosexual or not, this scene represents the stereotypes about homosexual in general’s minds, most of the people still cannot accept them. |

3:26 MV | A couple intentionally bumped two gay couples, this also shows how people view them, and also shows people pick on the weaker ones. |
The whole song is talking about homosexual, persuading people to accept them, they deserve the same love as us because they are all human beings. The song repeats “I can’t change, even if I tried” for many times, it tries to tell people that they cannot be cured with religion or treatments, that’s their natural sexual orientations.
The song “Same Love” tries to break the stereotype toward homosexual, homosexual stereotypes are everywhere and it is conscious, the topic of homosexuality has been a really hot topic but it is also a controversial topic to discuss about lately in 2017. Most people think that being gay is guilty according to the bible, so people who do not believe in Christianity also feel guilty of being gay because they would be looked down by other people just because they are gay, the online media, a place which influence most people, should do the work of being unbiased based on this controversial topic, so it will stop impacting the society and new generations.
“All males homosexuals should be converted to female” this is what Billy Graham claimed, he leaves a painful legacy as to all homosexual people as he died, that claim was stereotyped and the claim did influence many people, it weakened the reputation of homosexuality, the claim is also stereotyped based on gender, acting like female doesn’t mean the person is gay, and being gay doesn’t mean that person has to act like a girl, it becomes extremely biased since he mentioned about gender.

0:26 | Mom is wearing high heels, usually, no one would wear high heels at home, this is stereotyped based on gender, saying that women have to be beautiful and they care too much about their appearances. |
Both commercials are gendered, the audience would miss most details because that counts as hidden stereotypes, unconscious gender bias is everyone’s issue, women have been stereotyped already, and we can’t feel it even though gender biases are everywhere around us.
Bias In Media, How Can We Be More Aware Of Bias
Bias, based on personal favour and opinion to a specific thing or an event, bias occurs when people view things based on their personal opinions, it influences the society in both good and bad ways. Media bias are more common and it occurs more frequently since the internet is becoming an indispensable part of our daily life. However, bias is not always good, it often has bad influences to people, for instance, it impacts the voters, it may changes voters’ opinion to a politician, bias also disconnects us and separate us from the internet, or even in real-life because when a person provide his/her own opinion to something that shouldn’t contain opinions such as political, or a person spreads about a viral rumor, these are all going to cause feelings and emotions from other users, and the feeling they will feel is under control of the content, its primary purpose is to make people feel the same way as it wants them to feel. However, some political contents cause people to feel in different ways, and when people view that content based on their own opinions, they will have arguments between each other, this is how bias and stereotypes in media disconnect us.
Apparently, we cannot stop media bias completely, but we can protect ourselves from
being affected by media bias. To be more aware of media bias, users have to identify the contents primary purpose and then decide if it’s biased, If the content is News or about political, we have to see if the content contains personal opinions or biases based on placement of statements, word selection, headline, camera angle, source control and statistic counts. The reason for why there are endless viral rumors spreading around social media is that most people would share or retweet that content, we shouldn’t share as we realize that content is fake or biased to reduce the post impressions because a share may affect many people without even knowing.
Next, we can also speak up, saying the content is biased of not, telling other people do not be affected by the biased content, also remember to bring evidence to prove how is it based, spread messages to bring awareness through social media will be the best way, do not be afraid of speaking up for for something, a short warning message could change the world! Avoiding bias is our next exit!
Bias are everywhere in our daily-life, most common biases are gender bias, homosexual bias and racial bias. As i mentioned before, gender bias is unconscious, our mind have already grown in a stereotyped way, there are many other stereotypes toward men and women, such as men don’t care about other people’s feelings, they let women do all the work at home, women care more about the family instead of job, friends, reversely, men care more about their jobs. I could state these common and unconscious stereotypes because some of these stereotypes I stated there also occur in my family. However, these stereotypes do not seem weird, they are all really common, my dad really cares about his job, so he would spend longer time focusing on his job, reversely, my mom would build good relations between family members, my dad did all the work of managing money and bank accounts and my mom took care of all the households in my family. Until my mom wanted to break the stereotype, I supported her because I was also learning about this unit, my dad accepted with alacrity, both of them take care of the household and my dad starts spending more time with this family. However, I was fortunate that both of them wanted to break the stereotypes, some people don’t even have chance to break the stereotypes, media should not be gendered. So, how do we stop biases and stereotypes? There are actually a lot of things we can do, such as point it out first and stand up for the rights that we deserved, do something that brings awareness on social media so people would not be affected by biased or stereotyped media, such as spreading out awareness messages and passing down techniques for detecting bias and stereotype.
Final Analysis
Biases and stereotypes change how the audience think to something, there are many readers who don’t know the effects of the biased content, and do not know how detect bias from the content, would be affected by the biased content, because that would make them become emotional, biased contents are made to create emotions with hidden stereotypes and biases, people should be more aware of these hidden biases and stereotypes, this is the main focus of my conclusion, bringing awareness to internet users, avoid hidden biases and stereotypes, don’t let them affect us.
After completing this project, I’ve learned a lot of new techniques for detecting bias and avoiding from media biases. It also changed the way I view media bias, before learning this, It was easy to affect me with hidden biases or stereotypes, I got emotional while watching biased news, most importantly, I didn’t know its primary purpose, I didn’t know if it was biased, I just got emotional as the news report wants me to, all news organizations are saying that they have proved journalists, they are speaking up for rights and fighting against media bias, it just easily changed my mind, I thought the journalists are all expected to be unbiased, news reports are also expected to be unbiased, I simply just believed in every news organizations since all of them sound unbiased and the ones who find out the truths and break the stereotypes for us.
Everyone has their own preferences based on what channel they would like to watch, so what if someone only prefer to one channel and the reason is not because it’s proved to be unbiased, instead, it always exaggerate an event an creates more interesting topics, that person would be the victim of keep being affected by the biased news, and if the affected reader spreads about his/her emotions, spreading emotional messages, more people would be affected. Apparently, I was that person, the news could affect easily through hidden biases, the hidden stereotypes stereotyped my views toward many things without even realizing that I was being affected. However, through some practices in this unit, My views and thinking based on some controversial topics are getting mature, I would see if the news report is biased or not, without detecting it first and just being influenced by today’s challenging media information, we would be easily affected by the biased content. When I’m detecting bias, I would always see the content’s primary purpose first, then evaluate the content. Also, I would not be so emotional as before when seeing some shocking news(breaking news such as Florida shooting still make me emotional tho) or seeing shocking headlines.
