As part of the experienced online application, candidates will respond to two short answers prompts.  These short answers allow you to tell us more about your teaching experience and demonstrate your expertise in teaching.  Teacher candidates must respond to the four short answer prompts below in 300-500 words per essay.

DCPS recommends that candidates draft their short answer responses in Microsoft Word prior to submitting. Here are a few other overarching suggestions:

Short Answer 1:

The following is a scenario that you may experience as a teacher in a DCPS classroom. Please use the context below to answer all questions.

Imagine that it is mid-February, and you work at a Title 1 school in DCPS. Your classroom is made up of students who are at varying grade levels, including some who are above grade level. A percentage of your below grade-level students receive special education services. Additionally, a number of your on grade-level students are failing your class due to chronic truancy.

Answer the following questions based on the scenario described above:

Response Rationale: This is an opportunity to communicate what actions you might take around a scenario that you may experience as a teacher in a DCPS classroom. Please make sure to answer the question according to the scenario and not based on your own experience in your classroom, unless it is directly relevant. You should include a clear explanation regarding your responsibility for students’ academic growth. In addition, please provide concrete strategies that you would use inside and/or outside of the classroom to ensure that students reach their academic goals.

Short Answer 2:

From a prior school year (e.g., 2016-17), what was one measurable academic goal that you set for your students?

Response Rationale: For this question, we are looking for you to provide quantitative evidence around how your students performed at the end of the year in relation to an academic goal. This is an opportunity to share your vision or results regarding student academic achievement. Please provide a specific, measurable goal that you set for your students. Provide rationale for why you chose that goal and why it was important in relation to your students’ success. You should include specific examples around how you tracked students’ progress towards your goal.
