EVENT: LingHacks 2019-20 Executive Team Recruitment

Applications for the LingHacks 2019-20 executive team are now open!

LingHacks, an international 501(c)(3) nonprofit partnered with the Obama White House's CSforALL Consortium, aims to equip students across the globe with interdisciplinary problem-solving skills through the intersection of math, computer science, and language.

In the 2017-2018 school year, LingHacks ran the world's first computational linguistics conference and hackathon series for high school students. Our goal was to empower and equip students with cutting-edge natural language processing, research, and collaboration skills. In the 2018-19 school year, LingHacks expanded internationally. We not only hosted the LingHacks II hackathon but also piloted a Workshops on Words series and launched a network of Computational Linguistics Clubs across the US, India, Canada, and Morocco. In 2019-2020, we will be hosting the LingHacks III hackathon, expanding our club program, and running more computational linguistics workshops.

Applications are open for outreach, sponsorship, curriculum, and operations roles as well as director positions. Apply at https://tinyurl.com/linghacks-19-20-team by June 15 for a director role and June 30 for all other roles.

The positions would mostly involve remote work throughout the entire school year. Team members are also expected to help on-site with the weekend-long hackathon which will most likely happen in Fremont in late March 2020, and holding local workshops and clubs would take place around Union City/at school at various points during the year.

More info can be found in the application form description and on our website (http://linghacks.tech) ; feel free to contact us at team@linghacks.tech with any questions. We look forward to reviewing your applications!

Event: Camp Campbell Cabin Leader for YMCA

Camp Campbell is looking for dedicated youth cabin leaders in the Santa Cruz Mountains. This is a week long program which will earn you community service hours.

Students need to be at least 15 years old, a sophomore in HS, and in good academic standing in order to participate.  If they’re missing a week of school to volunteer, they will need signatures on their paperwork from their teachers and school admin staff.  This is a one-week commitment (Monday through Friday) and students may choose whatever week works best for their schedule to attend.  We’ll have opportunities nearly every week from now through early June.  All meals and lodging costs are provided for free, and we credit each cabin leader with 87 hours of community service upon completion of our program.

Check out their flyer for more information and for who to contact.

Location: Guy Emanuele Elementary

Event: Assist the Kids Zone Program @ Guy Emanuele

Hi, Victor,

I got a message forwarded to me by our staff secretary at Guy Emanuele, Diana Christy, and she mentioned that you were looking for volunteer opportunities for the high school kids at James Logan.

I manage the ZONE After School Program over here at Guy Emanuele and we're always open to supporting the Logan students in achieving their community service hours.  We have a multitude of things we can use HS students for (e.g. tutoring, monitoring, mentoring, etc.).

I also wanted to reach out to see if you had any students who would be willing and able to come by and help tutor on a one-on-one basis.  I had a parent reach out to me about possibly getting some individual help on some homework and I immediately thought that there might be a Logan student who would be available to support.

You can give my email out to those students still looking for hours or have them come by room 39 at Guy Emanuele and catch me in my room.

I hope this helps you and the students over at Logan!

Thanks,
Andrew Cheng
