Dunia Tipu-tipu - Yura Yunita

Indonesian Pop

Narrative and deep lyrics.

This music video represents Indonesian people; specifically highlighting the relationship between people with deep connections of feelings and emotions. In the video there's a married couple, son & kid, dad & daughter, siblings, and long-time bestfriends. Through mise-en-scene their relationship seems to be represented in a positive way, judging from the warm lighting and the pastel-coloured props, which can indicate comfortness and the sense of warmth itself, creating a feeling of trust.

The way that the camera shots greatly clipped the people's emotions and humble interactions, they really did their best to show the nature of human’s broad emotion in one song.

As it was - Harry Styles

Pop

Bright colours and dance choreography.

Minimal storyline being told, but it is clear that they’re representing a couple of lovers, where the man faces a difficulty in moving on from the past. This can be seen through the performance where both of them are the one getting the spotlight in the videos with their distinctives choices of clothing from the dancer. The proof that the one facing difficulty is the man can be seen through the choreography where he is the only one lip-syncing while the females don’t and the way he is the one who kept chasing the woman, strongly implying that he still could not move on from the past relationships.

The visual and the “art style” of this song is very unique, or bizarre, but still it is flashy and fresh to be inspired with. Eventhough for RnB, it might not suitable to do.

Zombie - Jamie T

Indie

Minimum budget and independence.

Very simple, this music video is representing a social issue where teenagers lose their purpose in life and start wandering mindlessly with no excitement like a zombie. The teenager is represented as a band dressed in casual attire, but having the mindless-personality of a zombie that rips apart their own limbs, this can imply they are the literal reason why they lose themself in life. The representation of zomb]ies seems more legit when their face looks pale and the makeup creates an effect of skin tearing and withering apart.

I like how they came up with this simple concept of their song’s theme, this way of thinking can be applicable to prevent us from thinking too hard. The makeup is exotic, and might be useful.

Blinding Lights - The Weekend

RnB

Romantic and intimate settings of place.

The song is about a man who  seeks escapism through speeding his car and smoking, he is trying to escape the feeling of losing and missing his romantic peers. His red suits might imply his anger for losing someone he loves, the blinding rays of lighting represent the city neon-light that he passess through very quickly in a speeding car as he vents out his emotions by stepping on the gas.

I really like the non-diegetic of the repeating drums in the background, as it adds some exclusivity into the song, it makes me easily notice his song.

Now and Then - The Beatles

Rock

Band performance and unpolished clip.

This music video is representing a reuniting old-band reminiscing the old days while trying to recall on how they play their respective music instruments, this can be seen through shots of members of the band performing in a studio and the whitening hair implies their old/senior ages. In this scene, they’re bringing deceased member using AI technology.

I like how they make a contrast to the scene for when the flashbacks are happening and when they’re in the presents. This can be applied to our music video.
