An Important Message From Dana Algebra Teachers Mrs. Maria Garcia and Mr. Luis Gamez Introducing the “Puppies Behind Bars” Interdisciplinary Project

What is Puppies Behind Bars? This organization (PBB) trains prison inmates to raise service dogs for wounded war veterans and first responders, as well as explosive-detection canines for law enforcement. Puppies enter the prison at the age of 8 weeks and live with their inmate puppy-handlers for approximately 24 months. As the puppies mature into well-loved, well-behaved dogs, their handlers learn what it means to contribute to society rather than take from it.

Our dream is to be able to raise $6,000 to sponsor one of the puppies through this organization. The puppy will represent Dana Middle School AND Class of 2019 Algebra students.  We would also like to honor our veterans like our very own Coach Kevin Corrinet, a former Captain in the US Army.

Students and staff have already begun to work on perfecting their plank in their PE classes (and at home).  The Algebra portion of this project will include collecting and analyzing their personal and overall performance data. On January 23 or 24 students will compete in a “PLANK OFF” event against Mr. Gamez and Mrs. Garcia!

What we are asking of our Dana families, local businesses, and organizations?

We are asking that you consider making a pledge to a Dana student or participating staff member for each 30 seconds they are able to hold their plank. The amount you contribute per 30 seconds is entirely up to you. Pledge sheets will be available when we return from break in January, and donations will be collected in the Dana library. Checks should be made payable to “Puppies Behind Bars”, cash donations are also welcome.

Thank you for your support!
