Public Act 12 of 2014—Safety Drills
This Public Act revises the number and scheduling of required school safety drills. It went into effect on July 1, 2014. Ten drills will be required each year: five fire drills, two tornado drills and three “lockdown” drills. Schools are also required to develop and implement a cardiac emergency response plan.

The fire drills must have reasonable spacing between them and three must be held before Dec. 1; the other two must be held during the remainder of the school year.
The tornado drills can be held anytime during the school year as long as one of them is conducted in March.
The lockdown drills: one must be held before Dec. 1 and one after Jan. 1.
Another new requirement is that at least one safety drill must be held during a lunch or recess period or another time when a significant number of students are not in a classroom.
