Dear “Blue” community,

Hello and welcome!  My name is Dr. Todd Jones and it is my honor and privilege to serve as the principal at  Parry McCluer High School. This is my 3rd year as the principal at Parry McCluer High School and I couldn’t be more excited to continue working with our students this year.  As a teacher of 10 years, an assistant principal of 10 years, and a principal of 6 years I am excited to serve your children with a background in education from the great states of Texas and Virginia. I grew up close by in the Appalachia area in East Tennessee and spent my summers and school holidays coming up to Bedford where my family has a farm. So I feel like I have truly come home to my roots!

My wife, Joanna,  of 26 years currently works for the Lynchburg police in accounting and my daughter, Grace, is entering her sophomore year at Sweetbriar College. I am so proud of them both.  Little did I know that when I took the principal position I had family that attended Parry McCluer High School. When it was Buena Vista High School (before it was named Parry McCluer) and after it became Parry McCluer High School, I found that my great-grandfather graduated from Buena Vista High School, my grandfather attended Parry McCluer for a period of time, and my great-uncle graduated from Parry McCluer in 1932. I am even more proud as a result of being a “Blue” as I have a true family heritage and relationship with the school and community.

At Parry McCluer we offer a wide variety of curricular options for our students. Even though we are small we provide big opportunities for students in a small division. Every day students are focused on learning, growing, and improving in the areas of literacy, mathematics, history, and science. To complement our core offerings, we offer physical education, art, music, and a wide variety of CTE courses.  In addition, we provide dual enrollment courses, governor school courses, clubs, NHS, student council, beta club, and of course a robust athletic program.

Over the past two years, we have increased our scores in ELA by 19%, our scores in math by 22%, and our scores in science by 14%. We are incredibly proud of our students and our teachers as a result of their hard work and keeping academics as a priority. We are excited to see how much farther we can go. We can’t wait to see what we can accomplish during the 2024-2025 school year!

At Parry McCluer High School we are engaging in new leadership programming called “Blues Presents” to connect with our local community and provide students with leadership opportunities. During our flex time each Wednesday, students each day with our adopted social-emotional curriculum known as Character Counts.  We also have clubs on Tuesday to ensure a wide variety of opportunities are available for our students to be engaged in.

I am so proud of the Buena Vista community of students, parents, teachers, and staff. As an administrator, I am also thankful to work with so many amazing people in the community. Thank you for all you do for our students at PMHS and let me know if I can help you in any way. My office is always open and I will always be glad to meet with you and discuss any needs you may have. Thank you in advance for working together with our staff.  The academic, athletic, and arts success of our students is always a priority and I look forward to collaborating with you and ensuring our continued success as a school. Go Blue!
