Theatre Arts Foundations is an introductory level course for students with little or no theatre experience. This course combines beginning acting exercises, character analysis, scene work, and simple acting projects along with the exploration of the various areas of technical theatre and production. Students will participate in both formal and informal productions and direct a brief scene. Students are expected to maintain a portfolio which contains written and audio/visual examples of their work. This course is aligned with the NC Essential Standards for Theatre Arts at the beginning level.

Prerequisite: Successful completion of Theatre Arts Foundations and/or portfolio/audition and placement exam

In this course emphasis is given to speech and diction, body language, addressing an audience, pantomime, and oral reading. Students will perform several small one-act plays during the semester as well as presenting a directing project. Students are encouraged to attend and critique at least one university theatre production or community play of comparable quality. Play selections must be approved by instructor. Students are expected to maintain a portfolio which contains written and audio/visual examples of their work. This course aligned with the NC Essential Standards for Theatre Arts at the intermediate level.
53175X0 Theatre Arts Proficient-Honors (May be repeated for credit)
Prerequisite: Successful completion of Theatre Arts Intermediate and/or portfolio/audition and placement exam
The course will consist of more individualized work in a seminar style with in-depth research, analysis, application, and production. Students will perform and direct several small one-act plays as well as presenting a directing project and critiquing one peer project. Students will participate in one main stage production and are required to attend and critique professional, university, community, and other high school plays assigned by the instructor. Students are expected to maintain a portfolio which contains written and audio/visual examples of their work. This course is aligned to the N C Essential Standards for theatre arts at the proficient level.
53185X0 Theatre Arts Advanced-Honors (May be repeated for credit)
Prerequisite: Successful completion of Theatre Arts Proficient-Honors and/or portfolio/audition and placement exam
Students will be expected to participate in and also direct small group improvisations, serve as stage manager and assistant director. They must be able to work on independent projects, prepare a prompt book, and direct a one-act play. Students are required to attend and critique professional, university, community, and other high school plays assigned by the instructor. Students must complete a minimum of five service hours towards after-school productions. Students are expected to maintain a portfolio which contains written and audio/visual examples of their work. This course is aligned to the North Carolina Essential Standards for Theatre Arts at the advanced level.
53612X0 Technical Theatre Foundations (May be repeated for credit)
Prerequisite: None
This course is an introductory level course for students with little to no theatre arts experience in the area of Technical Theatre. This is a non-performance course designed for students who wish to be involved in the theatre program. Students learn all the production aspects of theatre at a basic level including costuming, lighting, scene design, construction, props, sets and management. Students are expected to maintain a portfolio which contains written and visual examples of their work.
53622X0 Technical Theatre Intermediate (May be repeated for credit)
Prerequisite: Successful completion of Technical Theatre Foundations and/or portfolio and placement exam
This is a non-performance intermediate level course designed for students who wish to be involved in the theatre program at a more in-depth level. In addition to learning all the aspects of backstage theatre production, students will commit to applying their education and learning for both informal and formal productions as a member of a crew. Students are expected to maintain a portfolio which contains written and visual examples of their work.

Prerequisite: Successful completion of Technical Theatre Intermediate and/or portfolio and placement exam
At the proficient level, students will be able to demonstrate and apply their knowledge and skill in the technical aspects of theatre production. Independent problem solving of technical challenges will be expected. Emphasis is placed on demonstration of student creations and designs with critique. Students will commit to leading a crew during a formal production and maintain a prompt book. Students are expected to maintain a portfolio which contains written and visual examples of their work.

Prerequisite: Successful completion of Technical Theatre Proficient-Honors and/or portfolio and placement exam
At the advanced level, the student will assume an independent management/leadership role over their peers during formal productions maintaining a prompt book and portfolio of their experiences. They will apply their experience, knowledge and education during the design phase, rehearsal process and performance run of at least one full stage formal production. They can demonstrate a mastery of all aspects of Technical Theatre. Students are expected to maintain a portfolio which contains written and visual examples of their work.
