Additional information is available on the YPAS web site at www.ypas.org

Band – Dr. Callihan [kevin.callihan@jefferson.kyschools.us] & Mr. Gregory [jason.gregory@jefferson.kyschools.us]

Brass and Percussion

Applicants should be prepared to perform major scales ascending and descending for two or more octaves in the following concert keys: C, F, B-flat, E-flat, A-flat, and D-flat. (If students can perform more scales, including minor forms, they should do so.) Be prepared to perform a chromatic scale ascending and descending in two or more octaves. Students perform one solo from the repertoire for their specific instrument that demonstrates technical and lyrical facility; a movement from a sonata or concerto would be an excellent choice. An individual part from a band arrangement or a transcribed piece from pop or commercial literature is unacceptable. Students should be prepared to sight-read short exercises that are given at the audition.

Percussion - applicants should demonstrate the above proficiencies on, timpani, and marimba (2 mallet). A 3 or 4 mallet marimba solo is encouraged but not a must. Percussionists should also supply their own sticks and mallets for the audition.

Guitar – Mr. Schroeder [ascher.taylorschroeder@jefferson.kyschools.us]

Applicants for Guitar I should display a genuine and serious interest in learning the instrument. No previous experience is required. Applicants with previous guitar experience may elect for Guitar II and should demonstrate sufficient knowledge of all open position chords (C, G, D, A, E, Am, Em, Dm) and reading fluency in first position. Previous experience with classical guitar/finger style technique is encouraged but not required. If you are interested in placing into Guitar II, please make a note of that on your Google Form and Mr. Schroeder will send you the appropriate materials. No formal audition is required for Guitar I but you are more than welcome to schedule a time and discuss the scope of the course or what placement you may think is appropriate.

Orchestra – Ms. Barbosa [michele.shiehbarbosa@jefferson.kyschools.us]

Applicants should be prepared to play two octave (possibly three; one for basses) major scales ascending and descending in the keys specified by instrument. They should prepare the orchestral excerpt supplied by YPAS and available at the YPAS Orchestras website. Also, applicants should prepare a solo of their choice. Solo excerpts should come from the solo repertoire for their specific instrument; selections from a sonata or concerto would be an excellent choice. An individual part from an orchestra class arrangement or a transcribed piece from pop or commercial literature is unacceptable. In addition, applicants are given a short musical piece to sight-read.

Piano –  Dr. Ertz [matilda.ertz@jefferson.kyschools.us]

Students should be prepared to play two solos in contrasting styles (one memorized) and one major/harmonic minor scale (four octaves, hands together). Typical audition repertoire includes original keyboard compositions. Students are asked to sight-read.

Vocal – Mr. Cook [jacob.cook@jefferson.kyschools.us]

Students should be prepared to sing “Down by the Sally Gardens” arranged by Benjamin Britten. Students will also be required to sing vocal exercises taught during the audition and sight-read using solfege. Finally, students should be prepared to talk about previous choral experiences.
