Multnomah County Democratic Party Central Committee
Resolution 2022-8: A Call to End Federal Student Loan Interest
Whereas, public education is an investment in the future of our society, and money invested in federal student loans goes directly into the education of the next generation;
Whereas, students should have the fewest barriers possible to increase their educational opportunities;
Be it resolved that the Democratic Party of Multnomah County calls on Oregon’s elected representatives in the U.S. House and Senate to introduce and advocate for the following changes to current federal loan policies:
1. Stop charging interest on student loans, for currently outstanding loans and as part of future federal student loan contracts.
2. Clear unpaid interest from outstanding balances.
3. Retroactively apply all student loan interest paid to date to any remaining principal on outstanding loans. Should there be a remaining balance of interest paid, credit it to the debtor as a tax credit to be used over a generous balance of years.
Adopted unanimously by the Multnomah County Democratic Party on December 8th, 2022
