Hi ______,
Summer is coming! I've been working with a local climate action group, Mothers Out Front, to find simple, measurable ways to help curb climate change impact in our community. Want to help?
Here's the background – on those really hot dog days of summer, when everyone has their AC units running, we use a lot of electricity! When demand for electricity spikes on these “peak energy days,” the most polluting and most expensive power plants are brought online to meet demand. These power plants use dirty fossil fuels that cause terrible air pollution and accelerate climate change.
The good news is, when we work together, we can prevent these “peaker” power plants from ever turning on, simply by conserving energy for just a few hours every summer. By signing up for "Shave the Peak" alerts from Green Energy Consumers Alliance, you can find out when your actions will make the biggest difference. Small things like dialing back your AC and running your dishwasher at night can have a big impact when we all do it together.
Shave the Peak alerts will give you a heads up so you can plan ahead to save energy. You can sign up for email or text alerts from the Green Energy Consumers Alliance here:

You can find tips for minimizing peak electricity usage with the handy checklist here:
If we all act together, we can save some money and save the planet! Talk about a win-win! Let me know if you have any questions or want to get more engaged with this and similar climate initiatives.
All the best,

Put pressure on the electric utilities to send out peak alerts to all of their customers, so everyone can learn about the importance of “shaving the peak.” Public education about peak energy demand today will reduce emissions, utility costs, and air pollution, while also preparing customers to save money when Time of Use rates are available in the future.
If you’re a customer of Eversource, National Grid or Unitil, send an email to the representatives for your electricity provider (listed below).

Dear ____ ,
I am a Massachusetts electricity customer who is looking forward to the roll-out of Time of Use rates, hopefully to be approved by the DPU soon. I think it is important for customers like me to know how to save money, reduce emissions, and protect air quality by choosing to conserve energy when demand is high. Shifting energy consumption to off-peak hours is a win-win-win for everyone - consumers, grid operators, and our climate.
While we wait for the rollout of Smart Meters, I strongly urge you to start educating consumers about peak demand now so that Time of Use rates can be adopted as quickly as possible. You can start by sending out alerts this summer encouraging customers to reduce electric usage on peak days – and letting them know that time of use rates are coming.
Alerting customers a day ahead of predicted peak demand, along with suggestions for shifting demand to off-peak hours can be a powerful tool to save money and reduce climate emissions.
I am working to educate my friends and family about the importance of conserving energy on peak energy days, but you can help by reaching so many more!
Sincerely,

If you are a customer of a municipally-owned electric company (ex. Concord, Belmont, South Hadley, Peabody), find contact information for your municipal light plant using this directory. If this proves a challenge, you may instead choose to send an email to one of the big three electricity providers listed below.

Sample email:
Dear ____ ,
I am an electric customer, and I am writing to urge the municipal light department to educate and incentivize customers to conserve energy on peak demand days.
I think it is important for customers like me to know how to save money, reduce emissions, and protect air quality by choosing to conserve energy when demand is high. Shifting energy consumption to off-peak hours is a win-win-win for everyone - consumers, grid operators, and our climate.
I look forward to seeing a robust roll out of things like time-of-use rates, smart meters, and peak energy alerts. I am working to educate my friends and family about the importance of conserving energy on peak energy days, and I would like to see a community-wide effort to get the word out about this important issue!
Sincerely,
