Jan.31, 2025,

IMPORTANT ANNOUNCEMENT AND GREAT NEWS

February 2025 marks the sixth year anniversary of our PB operations at ODAS Park.

On behalf of the organizing committee I am very pleased to announce that the ODAS Park Pickleball Club is now affiliated with Pickleball Ontario. In future, when you join (or renew) your membership in Pickleball Canada you will actually be able to choose our club by name rather than choosing the v-club option. At the same time, you will pay the appropriate club fees directly to the club. This process will apply to both our regular session players AND drop-in players.

Moving forward, every player who uses our courts on a regular basis MUST be a current member of PBC AND ODAS Park PB Club.

I want to emphasize some important points to ensure your entry request is accepted.

1. Use the correct email address for e-transfers: odasparkpb@gmail.com

2. Your fees MUST be received no later than five days after we receive your registration.

3. All applicants must be a member of Pickleball Canada and ODAS Park PC Club.

The organizing committee has to deal with upwards of 200 forms, while you only have to deal with one. Please make sure it's accurate and complete.

I want to remind everyone that cold and flu season has arrived and Covid is still circulating. If you are feeling unwell: have a runny nose, cough, or any other signs of a respiratory infection, PLEASE STAY HOME.

COVID was a good example of how social distancing, regular hand washing, and the use of masks help reduce the spread of viruses. Please consider packing a personal-size hand sanitizer in your sports bag and use it regularly. It's okay to wipe the handle of your paddle once in a while.

We have players waiting for surgery or recently had surgery. Some of us collect Social Security. Please show respect for your fellow players.

NOT WELL? STAY HOME!

- Thank you, Robin.

SPLIT COURT PROTOCOL

One of our goals at ODAS is to provide competitive, fun games for a variety of levels. If it is suggested that you might be more comfortable playing on the other courts during split-court sessions, it is only because balanced games are more fun and engaging for everyone.

A 3.0 rating is a fairly high level. A solid 3.0 player can consistently serve in, can sustain a rally, tries to incorporate a variety of shots into their game, and is aware of court positioning. These players are not beginners and many are happy playing at that level because moving up to a 3.5 means working intensely on improving both the slow and fast game. There is a big difference between a 3.0 and a 3.5 level both in the accuracy, the strategy, and the variety of pace in the games.

If you want to improve your game, practicing different shots in games with players who are at your own level is an effective way to progress. Playing with significantly better players will only result in unbalanced games that leave you and the other players frustrated.

It’s a lot of work organizing these sessions. Please help by accurately self-assessing your play. If you are consistently losing games on the 3.5 side by a wide margin, it is time to join the 3.0 group. If you are finding games too easy on the 3.0 courts, it’s time to move up a level.

Saturday and Sunday morning PB

Set up and take down are included in the two-hour time slots at ODAS park. I know there are some sessions where players have set up and started games early and certainly sessions where some players have played well beyond the two hours.

But on the weekends I need play stopped and take down finished within the two hours ( I.e. by 12:45 pm).

The rink is opened at 1:00 pm for skating and cars will start arriving before that. I need bodies AND cars out of the rink and parking lot ASAP.

Thank you, Robin.

Pickleball Canada Memberships

ODAS Park requires all sport groups to carry liability insurance which is why we require anyone playing PB at the roller skating place to belong to Pickleball Canada. All members are covered by quite a comprehensive plan which can be viewed on their website.

Please be aware that:

1. All memberships expire Dec. 31

2. It is the player's responsibility to renew their memberships promptly to ensure proper coverage before play in 2025.

3. If you obtained a new membership on or after Sept.1 You are covered for the three remaining months of 2024 and all of 2025. You should not receive a renewal notice.

4. You will be required to provide your PBC card with your registration request for the Winter Sessions.

5. Here’s the link: https://pickleballcanada.org/

New email address for e-transfers:

odasparkpb@gmail.com. This one has an automatic deposit.

Open sessions with split courts:

This is a reminder that any player who has signed up for an open session (split courts) is assumed to have a self-rating of at least 2.0 as per the website and entry form. This rating would be achieved by taking a series of beginner lessons and/or sufficient court time to learn the basics of the game including the basic rules and how to score. There is a chart on the website at:
https://www.odaspb.ca/rules.htm

These sessions would not be appropriate for new players. We have set aside Thursday nights in the fall sessions for those players. Alternatively, beginner lessons are available from coach Ken Pecarski at: https://www.odaspb.ca/clinics.htm.

November, 2024

PLEASE NOTE:

1. The phrase "open session" does NOT mean it is a drop-in time slot. It means ratings from 2.0 and up can enter and the courts will be split accordingly.

2. There will be no  Winter 2025 session that allows rank beginners to join. Everyone must have played the game, know the basic rules, and how to score (2.0 level).

3. Winter Registration will be limited to 40 players to avoid long wait times. If you plan on being away for a significant period of time between January and March, please consider not registering  just to "save a spot". That will directly affect someone else's ability to play the full 10 weeks.  There will be another intake in the spring.
