NEW STUDENTS Fall 2022 Part-Time Programming

Greetings prospective students! Registration and enrollment for our Part-Time programming for Fall 2022 is now open! Workshops are available to ages 16+.

Exceptional Minds' Seasonal Workshops are virtual and on campus courses covering introductory and intermediate digital arts skills. These seasonal workshops offer students 16 years and older the opportunity to explore their interest in a variety of courses. Many of the workshop participants ultimately continue on into our full-time program and then go onto pursue careers in the digital arts and entertainment.

If you are a new student, you must complete the 2 steps below in order to be able to register for the fall workshops:

Small Group Workshops

Small group workshops have a 1:5 teacher to student ratio. Workshops are offered in a five-lesson package for $800 or $170 per class drop-in. All workshops are virtual unless otherwise noted.

The 2022 Fall Trimester is broken into two sessions.  Please see the graphics below for details.  Course descriptions are available at the bottom of this document.

Workshop Registration

Session 1 runs September 17-October 27 and Session 2 runs October 29-December 8.  Please complete the Google form for Session 1 Workshop Registration and/or Session 2 Workshop Registration to begin the Workshop registration process.  Please note that class size is limited and enrollment is subject to approval by the Associate Director. *All Workshops are virtual unless otherwise indicated. Proof of full COVID-19 vaccination is required for in-person instruction.

Drawing Lab

Drawing Labs are $80 per Lab (invoiced monthly) and are held each Wednesday from 4:00pm-6:00pm California time.  Students can attend as many or as few Labs as they wish per session.  Please complete this Drawing Lab Registration Form for our Wednesday Drawing Lab.  

Private and Semi-Private Lessons

If you would like to request private or semi-private lessons for Fall 2022, please complete the 2022-23 Private and Semi-Private Lesson Request Form.  Please note there is currently a waitlist for private and semi-private lessons. If we have not contacted you about lessons within the past 6 months and you would like to be considered for lessons this fall, please fill out this form to assist us with scheduling. Preference will be given to those who have been on the waitlist the longest. Lessons are scheduled on a first-come, first-served basis depending on instructor availability so we cannot guarantee enrollment.

Course Descriptions 

3D Creation Lab • Students will create 3D models and animation in Autodesk Maya and explore the 3D production pipeline from modeling to finished rendered imagery. A variety of modeling and animation techniques will be covered. Additionally, students will be introduced to texturing, lighting, and rendering. Additional focus on the 12 principles of animation with emphasis on timing, weight, and performance are included. Students of any skill level are encouraged to take this class.

3D Foundations For students wanting to learn how to model, rig, texture or animate in Autodesk Maya. Instructors will lead students through projects using industry standard practices and software to help students create unique objects and characters. This is a class for beginning and intermediate 3D artists.

Animation: Project Boom! • This workshop is designed for students looking to learn about the principles of animation using arcs, anticipation, and squash and stretch. In the project, students will pass an explosive device from one character to another that will eventually reach an explosive conclusion through 2D animation in Adobe Animate. At the end of the workshop, projects are edited into one film.

Animation Drawing: Anatomy •  Anatomy drawing workshop is a fundamentals class where students learn how to draw the human body. Students will learn how to draw proper body proportions that include heads, hands and feet. The techniques learned in this class are fundamental to knowing how to do proper character designs. This class is for any skill level, and really great for beginners.

Animation Drawing: Life  •  Life drawing offers traditional foundational drawing techniques to help students learn how to capture real life objects in 3D form.

This workshop encourages working with traditional pencil and paper, mastering values and shading. For the fall of 2022, the workshop will be offered on site Saturdays, so please bring pencils and sketch books to use!

Animation Drawing: Observational   Observational drawing workshop is a fundamentals class where students learn how to draw form out of basic shapes and how it applies to everyday items. Students will learn about lighting and shading techniques. The techniques learned in this class are fundamental to knowing how to do proper background, prop and character design. This class is for any skill level, and really great for beginners.

Animation Drawing: Perspective •  Drawing in Perspective offers traditional foundational drawing techniques to help students create the building blocks of the characters, props, and backgrounds of their imaginations. Taking from observational drawing practices; students will apply what they learn about establishing horizon, eye lines, and vanishing points to create drawings that follow the rules of the real world to create accurate 2D representations of the shapes and forms that make up the world around us.

Animation Freestyle For students new to digital art-making or with a project in progress, this class serves as a place where creators can work alongside one another to accomplish their 2D Animation goals in Adobe Animate. Instructors will assist with students who are working on developing portfolio pieces, passion projects, and foundational animation and digital drawing exercises. This class is for all levels. This class can be taken multiple times and will be customized to the student skill level.

Animation Principles For students looking to learn about 2D animation, this class focuses on the fundamental building blocks of the process. Students will work to create classic animation exercises to help develop their understanding of the 12 Principles of Animation in Adobe Animate, and how those techniques apply to breathing some life into their own characters and graphics. This is a class for every skill level because mastery of the fundamentals is something any artist should strive for. This class can be taken multiple times and will be customized to the student skill level.

Animation Storyboarding Students will learn how a combination of camera shots, angles and movements, staging, and cutting, can be used to create a visually diverse and compelling story. They will also be exposed to professional examples of storyboards and animatics. By the end of this workshop, participating students will pick one of three prompts in order to create a 30-second animatic.

(NEW) Career Skills Development  This workshop, offered virtually, is designed to build the skills needed to become successful in a professional setting. Focusing on a behavioral and occupational curriculum, students will learn fundamental techniques in communication and situational awareness. They will also complete the course with a polished resume ready for job applications.  This workshop is only available as a 5-lesson package (no drop-ins).

Digital Painting  In this workshop, students will explore painting techniques in Adobe Photoshop to create cartoon and fantasy backgrounds using value maps and blending techniques to create dynamic lighting and shadow effects.  Students will produce a series of paintings exploring potential compositions using the Elements and Principles of design.  The sky’s the limit!

Intro to 3D: Blender This workshop provides an overview of the Blender software interface and explores the foundations of 3D art from modeling, texturing, and rendering to using modifiers and geometry nodes. Foundational skills are built that can be applied to game development, 3D animation, and VFX. This is a great workshop for students who already have an interest in 3D and want to see how their skills translate from one 3D software to another.

Intro to Adobe Character Animator Students will learn how to create and bring digital puppet characters to life using the tools in the Adobe Character Animator software. In this workshop, students will first create a puppet using Photoshop layers and then motion capture their movements to apply animation to their figure.  

VFX + Motion Graphics: Double Vision  Have you ever imagined what it would be like to meet yourself? This workshop explores split screen compositing, where you can make yourself a twin or make copies of other people! Students will learn how to mask different visual elements and combine different sources together to create a seamless final output in Adobe After Effects.

VFX + Motion Graphics: Star Warz VFX Students will add visual effects to footage like those seen in movies and television shows. This includes entities such as glows, laser blasts, and swinging sabers. The workshop will utilize the Saber plugin and the Adobe After Effects tracking system for completing short assignments. Students with continued interest in visual effects are encouraged to take this workshop multiple times to develop their skill set.

VFX + Motion Graphics: Text Animation & Effects Animated text is everywhere!  Create your own text animations that sizzle, swoop, and explode.  Students will use Adobe After Effects and its powerful text animation system and 3D camera to create animated text, shapes, and images that highlight words and emotions in a variety of ways.

VFX + Motion Graphics: YouTube Content Creator Using Adobe After Effects and/or Premiere, students will learn how to create and edit their own YouTube Content with amazing animated graphics and compositing effects. Using professional techniques, students can combine footage, text, graphics, and sound to create their own vlog, make a tutorial video, or create an unboxing video. The class will explore all of the stages of production including idea generation, writing, editing, and uploading the final video to YouTube.

VFX + Motion Graphics Freestyle For students new to digital art-making or with a project in progress, this class serves as a place where creators can work alongside one another to accomplish their visual effects or motion graphics goals using Adobe After Effects. Instructors will assist with students who are working on developing portfolio pieces, passion projects, and technical exercises. This class is for all levels.
