Friday, May 6th
10am-4:30pm
Deadline to apply is April 22nd, 2022
The past couple years have been difficult for everyone. Most are feeling isolated and burned out. Our goal in this intensive is to facilitate connections and generate inspiration.
For this year’s May Intensive, we’ll be going on location. The first part of the day will be spent in the Anchorage Museum. We will explore the exhibits and, with prompts provided, consider the range of ways your class(es) might be connected to these resources. Examples will be provided and members of the Museum’s engagement team will be present to share more about how they can collaborate on a range of assignments and activities.
We’ll then take a tour of downtown Anchorage – yes, I realize you all likely have visited the downtown area numerous times – the focus of this tour will be considering the place-based work that could be done. There will be specific stops along the way, highlighting historic or noteworthy locations and work that has already been done by UAA students.
Renewed energy and inspiration for a community-engaged project in your class. It’s not required that you develop something specifically connected to the museum or downtown area, but rather, you use these opportunities as a jumping off point. Additionally, the hope is that you will also possibly make connections with fellow community-engaged faculty. At this intensive, we’ll also discuss opportunities for funding available through CCEL.
Lunch will be provided, courtesy of CCEL, from a local restaurant. Unless the weather is particularly miserable, we’ll be grabbing box lunches from Snow City Cafe and enjoying a lunch together in one of the downtown parks, then heading out to explore the various opportunities for collaboration within walking distance.
As an added opportunity, our intensive happens to coincide with First Friday – we’ll be wrapping things up just as many of the shows start in the downtown area for those who would like to enjoy a bit of local art.
Please know that COVID precautions will be taken - we will follow CDC guidance and adjust as needed depending on case numbers, etc.
For those who experience disabilities and are not able to join on a walking tour, please contact CCEL and we can help organize transportation/accommodations.
Those new to community-engaged/service learning work are welcome, as are faculty who have utilized CE/SL in the past. There will be pre-reading to orient everyone to community-engaged/service learning.
This intensive is open to folks from community campus locations.
