Dear Parents,

God Forgives Those Who Repent

Jesus wanted us to learn about forgiveness so He told this story.

There was a father who had two sons. One day, the younger son came and asked for the money his dad had promised to give him someday. The son said, “I can’t wait. I want it now!” This made his father very sad, but he gave the money to his son.

The son went far away and spent the money on foolish things. Soon the son had no money at all, not even for food. He went to a farm and asked for a job feeding and caring for the pigs. He was so hungry, even the pig food looked good to eat.  He was sorry he had been selfish and foolish. Then he had an idea. He remembered that the servants in his father’s house ate better food and wore better clothes than he had now. He decided to go back home and ask his father for a job.

As he walked home, his father saw him coming down the road. The father was so happy! He ran out to meet his son. The son said to his father, “I have been bad. I can’t be treated like your son anymore. But please let me be your servant.” The father welcomed his son and forgave him. He said, “I will always love you. You will always be my son.” The father put the best robe on his son, a ring on his finger, and sandals on his feet. He gave a big party to celebrate his son’s return home.

The older brother was jealous. He complained that his father never gave a party for him, even though he always obeyed his father. The father put his arm around him and said, “You have a share of everything I have. Let’s welcome your brother, he was lost and now is found!”

Jesus used this story to teach about forgiveness. Our Father in Heaven does not like it when we do bad things and disobey, but He always loves us. Jesus died on the cross to take away our sins and give us forgiveness. Jesus also helps us to forgive other people who have been bad to us. He helps us forgive and love one another.

“Bear with each other and forgive one another if any of you has a grievance against someone.Forgive as the Lord forgave you.” Colossians 3:13.
