School: Perquimans County High School     

SECTION 1: SCHOOL IMPROVEMENT PLAN

Perquimans County Schools Strategic Goal 2: Provide services and staff to support the social, emotional, and physical needs of our students (“the whole child”) in a safe, secure, orderly, and innovative learning environment.

NC Star Indicator: A4.06 ALL teachers are attentive to students' emotional states, guide students in managing their emotions, and arrange for supports and interventions when necessary.

     

Measurable Objective to Achieve Goal:

  • Provide 100% of students with relevant SEL support and instruction on a monthly basis through the implementation of the Believe in You curriculum, MTSS problem solving, and staff training in SEL. 

   

Strategies to Achieve Objectives:

  • Implementation of Believe in You SEL program for all students each month
  • Utilize small group instruction during  embedded WIN time
  • Use of outside agencies to assist with social-emotional needs of students as appropriate
  • Staff training on a variety of topics including suicide prevention, non-curricular student groups, and MTSS monitoring and interventions
  • Use the threat assessment protocol to assist students in acute need
  • Ensure teachers have planning time to collaborate with other relevant staff to integrate social-emotional competencies into instruction and support individual students' needs.
  • Engage all school-based staff in a professional learning centered around building positive adult-student relationships
  • “Be The One” person (staff adopt students from all grade levels for weekly check-ins)

NC Star Indicator: A2.22 All teachers and teacher teams plan instruction based on the aligned and expanded curriculum that includes rich reading, writing, memorization, and vocabulary development.    

Measurable Objective to Achieve Goal:

  • Meet or exceed growth in all tested areas

     

Strategies to Achieve Objectives:

  • Focus on vocabulary to improve literacy skills
  • Provide staff with Keys to Literacy training with a focus on vocabulary
  • Keys to literacy instruction/routine
  • ACT Boot Camp
  • WorkKeys Boot Camp- Identifying Early Grads for WorkKeys
  • Purposeful scheduling for all students to reach completer status for Workkeys testing
  • Using the MTSS process to support students in need of remediation or intervention

NC Star Indicator: C2.01 The LEA/School regularly looks at school performance data and aggregated classroom observation data and uses that data to make decisions about school improvement and professional development needs.  

Measurable Objective to Achieve Goal:

  • Meet or exceed growth in all subgroups in tested areas with a focus on our SWD subgroup

Strategies to Achieve Objectives:

  • Use EVAAS data to assess past student performance levels
  • Implement vocabulary strategies for all students in all content areas
  • PLC sessions with staff to review student progress and checkin
  • Provide support and remediation during class time for students as needed
  • Data Collection:  Gather, Disaggregate, and use various types of data to inform school-based decisions.

SECTION 3: SCHOOL IMPROVEMENT PLAN APPROVAL

Perquimans County High School met on 9/28/23 and approved the School Improvement Plan with a vote of 22  .

STATEMENTS OF ASSURANCE

  1. General – The School Improvement Plan (SIP) for 2020-2021 is developed and approved in accordance with the provisions of G.S. 115C-105.27.
  2. Professional Development – There is a plan for the use of staff development funds that may be made available to the school by the local board of education to implement the school improvement plan. The plan may provide that a portion of these funds is used for mentor training and for release time and substitute teachers while mentors and teachers mentored are meeting.
  3. Classroom practice and school leadership in North Carolina will be improved through tailored, intensive professional development that includes follow-up, support, practice, feedback and evaluation.  It is a collaborative effort that provides every student access to a competent, caring and highly-qualified teacher.  All fiscal and human resources within the educational community support classroom instruction and interactions that prepare students to thrive and contribute to a complex, dynamic global and multicultural society.  Activities result in implementation of classroom practices that lead to improved student achievement.
  4. Planning Time and Duty-Free Lunch – In accordance with G.S. 115C-105.27(b)(6.) there is a plan in place to assure planning time during the regular student contact hours and duty-free lunch to the extent resources are available.  Our school planning team has developed a lunch duty plan that has been shared and approved according to the School Improvement Plan approval process.  In addition, a planning time schedule has been developed, shared and approved that details our progress in providing a minimum of five hours of planning time per week for every teacher.
  5. Safe Schools Plan -- In accordance with G.S. 115C-105.47 our school has developed a safe school plan, which promotes a climate of respect and appropriate personal conduct for students and school personnel, and provides for safety, security and order.  This plan is on file in the principal’s office.
  6. Healthy Active Children (K-8 schools) – The components of State Board of Education policy HSP-S-000 Healthy Active Children (HAC) have been considered in the school plan and are imbedded in the school schedule. The school is committed to providing physical education classes for all students with a physical education specialist. Students may elect to enroll in other physically engaging courses throughout their high school career.
  7. A plan has been identified to eliminate unnecessary and redundant reporting requirements for teachers and, to the extent practicable, streamline the school's reporting system and procedures, including requiring forms and reports to be in electronic form when possible and incorporating relevant documents into the student accessible components of the Instructional Improvement System.
