Upcoming Abiding Presence Choir Music
- Weekly Choir rehearsals resume Wednesday, September 9
- Rehearsals on Wednesdays, 7:30-9:00 p.m.
- Open to adults, high school singers, and (with director permission) middle school singers
- Contact Dr. David Chávez, Music & Worship Minister for more info.
Upcoming Repertoire
Adult Choir rehearsals are on Wednesday evenings from 7:30 p.m. to 9:00 p.m., September through June; we also have just-show-up-and-sing choir singing opportunities from time to time (stay tuned to the weekly e-news). Our choir sings repertoire of all eras, from early music to new commissions. As worship leaders during the Sunday morning traditional service and various special services, the choir is integral to supporting congregational participation in worship. If you love to sing, this is a great way to be involved!
- Open to adults and high school students (and middle school students with director permission)
- For choir singers: visit AbidingPresence.net/choir (this page) for upcoming music!

Let the same mind be in you that was in Jesus Christ, who, though he was in the form of God, did not regard equality with God as something to be exploited, but emptied himself, taking the form of a slave, being born in human likeness. And being found in human form, he humbled himself and became obedient to the point of death; even death on a cross. Therefore God also highly exalted him and gave him the name that is above every name, so that at the name of Jesus, every knee should bend in heaven and on earth and under the earth; and every tongue should confess that Jesus Christ is Lord, to the glory of God the Father.

Detailed instructions for Thanksgiving Eve recording
Instructions for recording...
- Sheet music and sing-along recording tracks (mp3, both all voices together and harmony part emphasized) are here: https://drive.google.com/open?id=118voCVTyVSJrXJi7u_UttNnQ4GAPisY3
- Record a video of yourself in landscape orientation (wide, not tall), listening to the track on headphones so we only hear your voice going into your mic/phone/camera.
- Make sure to do the two claps (or you can tap a music stand or some other visible act with a quick attack that creates a clear transient) in the count-off that starts the accompaniment track so we can see the claps in your video and hear them in your audio. This functions as a slate and helps in synchronizing audio tracks with each other and with video.
- All you need to record your video is your cell phone! Tap here for a tutorial. The built-in mics on modern smartphones (iPhone, Pixel, Galaxy, etc.) are actually pretty good (and generally better than the built in mics on laptop computers). Just record video using the built-in camera app and that will work great!
- Submit video recording at AbidingPresence.net/upload. Make sure to put your name and the title of the piece where it says "your name" on the webpage. When the upload begins, you'll see a progress indicator if you scroll to the top of the page. Do not leave the page until the indicator reaches 100% and the words change from “Uploading…” to “Files are uploaded!”
- Questions? Email David Chavez, Music & Worship Minister at Abiding Presence (dave@abidingpresence.net)
- Do we accept audio-only recordings? Yes, but, if you can record video please do! Both of our congregations love seeing your faces and it helps us feel more connected in these pandemic times to actually see people making music.
Instructions for singing/playing:
- All instruments and voices are welcome!
- The Form of the piece (the overall structure of large sections) will follow the "Suggested Form" in the box at top of page (AABACCBA) and we will tag (repeat) "shevet achim..." twice at the very end, slowing down the last time. You'll hear a voiceover in the recording track guiding you where to go.
- in section B, sing the parts marked "Choir" and "All" (a soloist or duet will sing the "leader" part).
- in sections A & C, feel free to sing any of the harmony notes (written in purple) any time after the first instance of those sections. Not sure what to sing? Here is a suggested breakdown by part:
- Altos & Basses: sing melody throughout
- Sopranos and Tenors: sing melody the first time through sections A and C, and sing harmony (in purple) on all subsequent repeats of those sections
- Note: the recording on YouTube contains a few extra bars (at about measure 36) which are not present in our version of the sheet music.
- Nov 7 (All Saints): “Jesu, Joy of Man’s Desiring” by J.S. Bach
- Nov 14: O Lamb of God (ACS 960)

For inspiration: here is the story behind this modern gospel classic, and the original recording. According to composer Richard Smallwood in his autobiography: “I felt helpless as I watched my loved ones suffering. I wanted to write a ‘pity party’ song . . . I wanted to develop it musically into a song that asked for God’s help. However, the more I worked on it, the more it kept going in the direction of a praise song.”

If unsure what to do, feel free to simply sing the melody or your voice part, but also please feel free to be creative! I will edit as needed but this should sound like free prayer and praise with a feeling of meditative spontaneity. We are going to record this more like a sea chanty (a trend in vocal music on the internet currently) than we usually would—i.e., we’ll sing/play it like something people working outdoors would sing to stay in rhythm with each other, with energy and with their whole bodies singing unrestrained!

Q: How do I record my video? What do I need? What do I wear?
A: All you need are...
- a device that can access YouTube or can play an mp3 file (a computer, or a phone/tablet) to listen to the recording track. It’s easiest if you use separate devices to listen and to record...
- a pair of headphones to listen to the recording track…
- and, a cell phone or tablet that can record video or else any video camera you have around the house. You may also use the webcam on your laptop, but unless you have an external camera/microphone, an average modern iPhone/smartphone or iPad/tablet will have a superior camera and microphone to that which is built in to an average laptop computer.
- Attire: wear whatever you would normally wear to the Thanksgiving Eve service! Any nice “church/temple clothes” are fine. You don’t need to get dressed up fancy, and we’re not asking everyone to color coordinate this year.
OK, so you’ve got your stuff. Here is what to do:
- Tap here to watch a short video demonstrating how to record yourself. For detailed instructions, read on...
- Make sure your camera is in wide/landscape format (so that the video is wider than it is tall).
- Make sure your camera is positioned so we can see your smiling face, and sing to the camera as much as possible. Does it feel a bit awkward? Yup! But, trust us: we’ve found that when people can see your faces, it’s one of the best ways to help our congregations feel connected in these times when we can’t be together in large groups in person. When lots of peoples’ smiling faces are on-screen, it’s a joyful experience and no longer awkward at all!
- Open up the recording track you’re going to use (links above).
- Listen to the recording track on headphones so we don't hear the recording track getting in the way of your singing.
- Start recording on your video camera/phone.
- Press play on the recording track.
- Sing/play along!
- Don't forget to smile (until the video ends) and have fun! Your house is now your TV studio!
- Share the video with us at AbidingPresence.net/upload any time between now and November 18.
- Questions? Need help? Email David Chávez, Music & Worship Minister (Abiding Presence), at dave@abidingpresence.net or call/text at 703-798-1433.

Virtual Choir for Kids - Call for Singers!
- Who? All elementary school-age students and all preschoolers. You don't need to have participated in choir in the past.
- When? Sing in our Virtual Choir for worship on Sunday, June 14. Videos are due on Thursday, June 11.
- What?
- The preschoolers are singing the classic “Jesus Loves Me.”
- The elementary students are singing "The Trees of the Field," a super-fun song that gets faster and faster as we go. There is a dance break in the middle so you can praise God with your whole body. You can even (with your family's permission) grab something around the house like a cardboard box to use as a percussion instrument, and play along during the dance break!
- How? All you need are a device that can access YouTube, a pair of headphones to listen to the YouTube singalong track, and a cell phone that can record video or else any video camera you have around the house. There is no need for any fancy recording equipment. Here is what to do:
- Find a quiet spot.
- Open up the singalong tracks on YouTube.
- Listen to the singalong track on headphones so we don't hear the singalong track getting in the way of your singing.
- Sing along and record a video of yourself singing/dancing/playing in wide/landscape format (so that the video is wider than it is tall).
- Don't forget to smile and have fun! Your house is now your TV studio!
- Share the video with us at AbidingPresence.net/upload any time between now and June 11.
Need recording tips or feeling stuck? Get in touch with David Chávez, Music & Worship Minister (dave@abidingpresence.net) and we'll walk you through it. Here are three quick tips:
- If you're trying to decide whether to record using a laptop or a smartphone, the smartphone will usually have a better microphone and camera. Most modern cell phones can make a surprisingly decent high-quality video and audio recording, as do many newer tablets. So, if in doubt and you have one available, use an iPhone/Android (or an iPad).
- The rear-facing camera (on the back of the cell phone) is usually the best quality camera, but the front-facing camera works just fine too.
- If you have two devices with you at home: use one device (like a laptop or tablet) to listen to the singalong track and use a different device (like a cell phone or video camera) to record your video.
We're excited to have you be part of worship!

Unless you have a USB microphone or audio interface, you will probably get the best audio and video quality by using your cell phone (rather than your laptop). Newer iPhones, for example, have pretty decent built-in microphones and video cameras!
- Don't forget to clap twice when indicated at the beginning of the mp3; this helps me line up your video and audio with everyone else.
- Send your video recording to dave@abidingpresence.net however is easiest; I recommend uploading it using send.firefox.com and emailing me a link.
