Tome Society Competition Overview

Chapter Competitions (1 entry per chapter)
YEARLONG
- Chapter of the Year (Spring Submission Deadline)
- Each chapter keeps track of certain items on a spreadsheet, such as meeting attendance, competition participation, etc. Each item is assigned a points value. The chapter with the highest points accumulated wins.
SPRING
- Chapter Service Project & Newsletter
- Each chapter chooses a philanthropy or other charitable cause to support for the school year. Chapters then submit a newsletter summarizing their project activities.
Team Competitions
YEARLONG
- Reading Bowl - MUST Register your Reading Bowl Team by deadline stated on Tome website (1 team of up to 15 members)
- Each chapter may recruit up to 15 students to participate. Students take 4 online tests over content from the It list books. The top 4 Georgia teams advance to a face-to-face competition at State Conference.
SPRING (1 entry per competition per chapter)
- Up to 4 students may work together to create a current issues essay and digital portfolio by following the news and world events. Topics may include but are not limited to current world, economic, environmental, health, and human rights issues.
- A team of up to 4 students will create a video commercial for their local school or public library. Students should plan, write, direct, edit, and produce the commercial in its entirety.
Individual Competitions
YEARLONG
- Tome Service Award - Spring Submission Deadline (as many students from each chapter may receive this award that meets the qualifications).
- Students will complete a minimum of 20 literary service hours.
- Membership Madness & Membership Mania (Awarded Locally)
- Students will recruit new members during the school year.
FALL (1 entry per competition per chapter)
- Students will write a blog post up to 500 words in length reviewing an It List book.
- It List “Like-Try-Why” Social Media Graphic
- Students will create a social media post recommending books to fans of an It List book
- It List Poetry Competition
- Students will compose a poem from the point of view of a character in a current It List nominee that represents the character's thoughts during a scene in the book.
- Student Book Choice Character to Author Letter
- Students will write a letter to the author as a character from a book of their choice.
- Students will create a short video displaying the 5 books that have impacted their life the most.
- Student Book Choice Digital Graphic Cover Redesign
- Students will use a graphic design program to redesign the cover of a book of their choice.
SPRING (1 entry per competition per chapter)
- It List Promotional Library Book Flyer
- Students will create a digital promotional poster for an It List book that could be displayed in a library including items such as a teaser blurb, rating, and QR code.
- Students will write a short story prequel or sequel to one of the It List books up to 1,000 words in length.
- It List Book Talk - Takes place IN PERSON at TomeCon - must attend to compete
- Students will present a speech at TomeCon Conference about one of the It List books and read-alikes that students might enjoy.
- It List Theme Essay Competition
- Students write a 3-5 page essay explaining how several of the Tome It list books for the year tie into the Tome Theme of the Year.
- Students will create an original 2D Fan Art piece representing a scene or characters from a current It List nominee.
Individual or Partner Events
FALL (1 entry per competition per chapter)
- Students create an infographic on a topic of their choice. The infographic must include data graphs, pictures, and text. All information must be factual and research sources must be cited.
- Students review an It List book in a video blog
SPRING (1 entry per competition per chapter)
- Student Book Choice Historical Fiction Infographic
- Students will choose a historical fiction book and create an infographic about the time period during which the book is set.
- Students will create a Book Trailer video up to 3 minutes in length advertising an It List book.
