Topic 8: Nonprofit vs Small business
Nonprofits and small businesses differ in several ways, including their purpose, ownership, and funding:
- Nonprofits are organized to promote a social cause or advocate for a particular standpoint, while small businesses are organized to generate profit. Nonprofits use any surplus money to benefit the community, while small businesses use it for the benefit of their owners and executives.
- Nonprofits are not owned by individuals and are instead led by a board of directors, trustees, or committee members. Small businesses, on the other hand, are defined as businesses that are organized for profit and meet the criteria in the Code of Federal Regulations (CFR) Title 13 part 121 for their primary industry classification.
- Nonprofits typically receive funding from donations, grants, and sponsorships, while small businesses may receive funding from loans, investors, and revenue from sales
Topic 9: Building a Donor Community
- Regular Overflow update letters so folks can trust their money is being used as it's supposed to. The most recent one went out mid October.
- Free cell phone wallpaper quarterly if you donate $250
- One annual event for everyone to gather and hear about what we’ve accomplished and just enjoy time together.
- Annual Overflow anniversary gathering seems like a good time for this
Next meeting: Jan. 3, 10 am, Google meets but email update in November and December.
