DISCHARGE EYELID SURGERY INSTRUCTIONS
***PLEASE NOTE***These instructions are to be followed as a general guideline.
Any changes to the instructions will be discussed with you by Dr. Petersen.
- Do not take any aspirin or aspirin-like medications (Advil, Motrin, Ibuprofen, etc.) for 2 weeks post-op. These drugs cause bleeding. If you have any questions concerning any medications, contact Dr. Petersen.
- Smoking causes wound healing problems. It is best (and recommended) not to smoke for 2 weeks following the surgery.
- The saline eye bandages should be changed every 4 hours, except during the middle of the night. The gauze bandages and sterile dressings will usually be provided by this office to the patient. Should you run out of the sterile saline solution, ½ strength hydrogen peroxide may be used to moisten the bandages.
- Ice over the gauze should be applied for 48 hours post-operatively on an intermittent basis.
- The patient should keep his/her head elevated for at least 48 hours post-operatively to reduce swelling and bleeding. The level of the head should be at least two pillow heights above body level.
- Sponge bathing is allowed for the first 2-3 days after which time showers will be permitted after the dressings and sutures are removed.
- Watch for active bleeding, extensive bruising, and/or abnormal swelling or pain. Particularly if one eye becomes more swollen, discolored, or more painful than the other (small differences in swelling and pain are commonly seen).
- Call Dr. Petersen should any disturbance with vision occur, or any loss of vision.
- If an appointment time was not given to you, call the next day to schedule your follow-up visit in the office. Approximately 3-5 days after the surgery the sutures will be taken out.
- No exercising, lifting, heavy exertion, heavy housework, etc. for 3 weeks. Too much activity can cause excessive bleeding and/or swelling to occur.
- If for any reason the patient becomes unresponsive, delirious, or you feel something is seriously wrong and needs immediate attention, call 911 and/or go immediately to the nearest ER.
***PLEASE NOTE***
During the 48 hours following surgery, swelling, bruising, and tearing may occur. These post-operative conditions will gradually disappear. Pain is usually noted to be more intense on one side than the other. Swelling is also not found to be symmetrical and may be more on one side than the other, and small variations are common. Any large differences in swelling should be brought to the attention of Dr. Petersen as soon as possible.
