By the end of the first quarter, fourth grade students should be able to:
Operations and Algebraic Thinking
1. Use the four operations with whole numbers to solve problems by:
- Interpret multiplication equations as comparisons.
- Multiply or divide to solve word problems involving multiplicative comparisons.
- Solve multi-step word problems
- Identify the missing symbols in number sentences.
Number and Operations in Base Ten or Fractions
1. Generalize place value understanding for multi-digit whole numbers by:
- Demonstrate an understanding of place value in whole numbers through 1,000,000.
- Read and write whole numbers in expanded, standard and word form through 1,000,000.
- Compare two multi-digit numbers through 1,000,000 based on digit value.
- Round multi-digit whole numbers (through 1,000,000) to any place.
2. Use place value understanding and properties of operations to perform multi-digit arithmetic by:
- Add and subtract multi-digit whole numbers.
- Estimate the answer to addition and subtraction problems using whole numbers through six digits.
Measurement and Data
- Represent and interpret data by:
- Create and/or translate data from different types of graphs.
- Make a line plot display using whole numbers as the data.
- Solve problems involving whole numbers on a line plot.
- Time and Money
- Tell time to the minute on a clock
- Calculate elapsed time
- Solve problems involving money
