 Camp Kidzu Frequently Asked Questions

2022

Camp Logistics

IMPORTANT NOTICE: As of May 26th, 2022, Kidzu Children's Museum's summer camp COVID-19 procedures have changed and our mask policy for camps has been lifted. Children enrolled in Kidzu’s summer 2022 camps are encouraged to wear face masks, but they will no longer be required.

Please note that Kidzu’s current mask policy for general admission is remaining in effect as the following:

Since Kidzu requires masks for visitors on Wednesdays, children at camp may be required to wear masks at certain times on those days if they will be in close proximity to the museum’s general admission visitors.

With this change, Kidzu is still fully committed to the safety of our visitors and staff. For a complete list of the health and safety procedures that Kidzu has in place, please visit https://www.kidzuchildrensmuseum.org/plan-your-visit/.

We appreciate your support and understanding during this unprecedented time, and we realize that these changes may bring uncertainty. If you have any questions or concerns, please do not hesitate to reach out to us at camp@kidzuchildrensmuseum.org or (919) 933-1455.

When is registration opening?

Kidzu Members: Tuesday, February 1st, 2022

General Public: Tuesday, February 8th, 2022

What are the age requirements at Camp Kidzu?

Kidzu-Led Camps: Ages 3-5

Mad Science Camps: Ages 6-11

Is there any flexibility with the stated age ranges for camps?

Unfortunately, no. Your child must be within the given age range by the first day of the given week of camp to register for the camp session. Kidzu also requires that each child be potty independent. Camp Kidzu will return to our typical age requirements in 2022, welcoming campers ages 3-5 at Kidzu-led camps. Camps conducted with our partner, Mad Science, are available to children ages 6-11.

What are the camp hours?

9:30am-3:30pm. Drop-off begins at 9am. Pick-up ends at 4pm.

How do parents/guardians drop off and pick up their children? Can I list more than one person to pick up my child?

Drop-Off: Parents/guardians will arrive with their children between 9am-9:30am at Kidzu’s Outdoor Learning Garden, located at 201 S. Estes Dr., Chapel Hill, NC 27514 (at the mall entrance adjacent to Alfredo’s Pizza Villa). Drop-off and pick-up will take place outside (weather permitting) to limit the number of visitors inside the museum. Parents/guardians will need to sign in at the camp table before leaving their child in Kidzu’s care. Camp staff will ask a few screening questions each morning to ensure the health and safety of Kidzu’s campers and staff. See the full list of screening questions in the “Health & Safety Procedures” section of this FAQ.

If Camp Kidzu staff deem weather conditions to be too hot or if rain is present, there will be a sign directing caregivers to drop campers off inside the museum.

Pick-Up: Parents/guardians will return to the camp table at Kidzu’s Outdoor Learning Garden between 3:30pm-4pm to pick up their child. Please park in the lot and walk up to Kidzu’s garden to prevent fire parking hazards from parking curbside. No camper will be released until a parent, legal guardian, or authorized caretaker has shown valid ID and signed the camp check-out form with a staff member. In the camp registration forms, there is space to list multiple individuals authorized for pick-up.

If Camp Kidzu staff deem weather conditions to be too hot or if rain is present, there will be a sign directing caregivers to pick up campers inside the museum. Arriving after 4pm may result in a late pick-up fee.

Pick-up and drop-off procedures are subject to change. Camp registrants will be notified as changes are made.

Is aftercare being offered this year?

Aftercare is not available as an add-on for summer camps. Instead, we provide extended 30-minute windows for drop-off and pick-up to provide additional time for caregivers. Drop-off begins at 9am and pick-up ends at 4pm. Extended drop-off and pick-up are included in the cost of camp at no additional fee.

How many children are in each camp session?

We will be offering our typical capacity at camps this year with 15 children per session for both Kidzu and Mad Science camps. Each camp will have 2-4 staff members.

What do I need to send with my child? What should my child wear for a day of camp?

Your child should bring a snack and lunch every day of camp, which should be free of nuts and nut-products. Snack and lunch will not be provided by Kidzu Children’s Museum.

Children enrolled in Kidzu’s summer 2022 camps are encouraged to wear face masks, but they will not be required. See Kidzu's updated mask policy for summer camps. Campers should be ready to move! Make sure they wear something comfortable that can get messy. In the event of an accident, pack a change of clothes in a labeled backpack. Close-toed shoes are recommended. Camp Kidzu t-shirts are included in the cost of camp and we ask that children wear their t-shirts for the final day of camp (Fridays).

How should I report my child’s allergies/health issues?

The registration form has a section regarding allergies and other health issues. Please fill in the appropriate information. Please be aware that Kidzu does not administer any medications with the exception of Epinephrine. If your child has an allergy that requires the use of an epipen, you will be asked to provide one.

If my child is sick or cannot attend for a day, is there a protocol to follow? What is the cancellation policy for camps this year?

We require all children to stay home if they are feeling ill, including, but not limited to, fever, cough, shortness of breath, or any other known symptoms of COVID-19. Please call (919) 933-1455 or email camp@kidzuchildrensmuseum.org as soon as possible if your child is unable to attend camp.

Sick Policy: If your child has symptoms related to any illness OR if you answer “yes” to any of Kidzu’s daily screening questions, your child will need to stay home from camp until they have met ALL of the following requirements:

  1. Your child has been symptom-free for a minimum of 24 hours without the use of medications.
  2. Your child has tested negative for COVID-19. Proof of a negative test result must be emailed to camp@kidzuchildrensmuseum.org prior to your child attending camp.
  3. No one in your immediate household is currently testing positive for COVID-19.

If your child has tested positive for COVID-19 in the 14 days prior to camp, you must provide proof of a negative test result prior to your child attending camp. If your camper cannot attend your week of camp due to a confirmed case or contact with a confirmed case of COVID-19, please contact our Camp Coordinator at camp@kidzuchildrensmuseum.org to discuss options.

Cancellation Policy: If your child cannot attend the entire camp session, a cancellation must be received in writing at least 14 days prior to the start of camp to receive a refund. If cancellation is requested less than 14 days prior to a camp’s start date, refunds will only be given if your camp spot has been filled. All refunds will incur a $50.00 per camp fee. See Kidzu's Policy for Camp Cancellations & Transfers Related to COVID-19 and our Daily Screening Questions.

If Kidzu needs to cancel a camp for any reason, a full refund will be offered.
