TENNIS TECHNICAL PACKAGE

NLGAMES 2020 Bay Roberts

Technical Packages for the NLGames are developed by the Provincial Sport Organization governing each respective sport. Questions should be directed to the Technical Chairperson as noted in Section 1 below, or to the SportNL Games Coordinator Stephanie Fowler by email sfowler@sportnl.ca or phone 709-576-3397.

3.        ELIGIBILITY

Competitors must be registered with Tennis Newfoundland and Labrador. All athletes must be in compliance with regulations governing regional eligibility as per NLGames Policy in Section 16 of this Technical Package. Athletes are required to have participated in competitive tennis matches and have played in a Tennis Newfoundland and Labrador sanctioned event within the past 2 years.  Athletes who do not meet this criteria should contact the Technical Director regarding exemptions.


4.        AGE CLASSIFICATION

11 - 18 years of age inclusive; two players per gender aged 11 – 14, and two players per gender aged 15 to 18 years. Athletes must be within the specified age parameters at the conclusion of the tennis event.


5.        PARTICIPANTS PER REGION

5.1        ATHLETES

4 female athletes.

4 male athletes.

Teams must have a minimum of two females and two males to participate in the NL Games.  Both female players must be in the same age group, both males must be in the same age group.  Players may only enter events as per the Competition guidelines thus teams with less than four  players of the same gender will forfeit matches they cannot place competitors in.   Teams with less than four players (two boys and two girls) are requested to contact the Technical Director regarding exemption criteria.

5.2        COACHING / MANAGERIAL STAFF

1 coach and 1 manager

Both genders must be incorporated in the selection of coach and manager.

On court coaching during the Games shall be authorized at the change of ends by strictly the team coach (only).


6.        STAFF SELECTION

All coaches must be at least 19 years of age as of August 15, 2020 and have completed a Tennis Canada/Tennis Newfoundland coaching workshop.Regions unable to meet this standard may apply to TNL for an exemption. Where two or more individuals are interested in coaching the Regional team, applications should be forwarded to the Technical Chair.


7.        REGIONAL QUALIFIERS

Regional qualifiers will take place the week of July 6-10 2020

9.        REGISTRATION DEADLINE

Each regional team must be registered with the Host by July 31 2020 through an online registration system that will be provided by the Host.


10.        GAMES-TIME MEETINGS

One coach or staff representative from each region and each sport is required to attend the following meetings in the Host region at the commencement of the NLGames:

  1. Coach / Manager General Meeting - date, time and location to be confirmed

Chaired by SportNL and including brief presentations from the Host Committee - will cover logistical information on transportation, accommodations, food services, entertainment, venues, etc.

  1. Sport Technical Meeting - date, time and location to be confirmed

Chaired by the Technical Chair of your sport - will cover sport-specific technical information for your competition. Each region is required to send a representative to the meeting.


11.        SANCTION

This competition is sanctioned by Tennis Newfoundland and Labrador.  The rules for this competition will be governed by Tennis Canada and “The Rules of the Court.”


12.        SCHEDULE

Final schedules will be posted on www.nlgames.ca in early August after regional teams are selected and registration is completed.

Tentative schedule overview as follows:

Two Division, four regions in each.  In the event that there are seven regional teams, schedule will stay the same and a bye given for any games scheduled against No. 8.

14.        MEDALS

Medals will be given to the male regional team finishing first, second and third respectively and the female team finishing first, second and third respectively.


15.        TECHNICAL INFORMATION

15.1  Competition Format

Encounters will consist of male singles (age 11- 14) male singles (age 15 – 18) doubles (11- 14) and doubles (15 – 18) and female encounters will consist of female singles (age 11- 14) female singles (age 15 – 18) doubles (11- 14) and doubles (15 – 18).  All matches will be an eight game pro-set (first player (s) to win 8 games. In the event matches are tied at 7 games all a ten point championship tie break shall be played to decide the outcome of the match. Players must win any tie break played by two clear points.

 

In the event that any two teams are tied after their encounter (each team has won two encounters), the Technical Director and Convener will examine the score sheets to determine which regional team won the most games for all matches played.  If teams are still tied, the number two ranked singles players from each team will play a singles championship 10 point tie break play-off match to decide the tie. Players must win any tie break played by two clear points.

Competition will be a 2 division round robin format.  For cross overs, the 1st place from division A will play 2nd place from division B and 1st place from division B plays 2nd place from division A.  The winners of each match play for 1st and 2nd with the losers playing for 3rd and 4th.

Round Robin Tie Breaking Procedure: _        

In regard to round robin play, determination of final standings and the elimination of any existing tie(s), the following procedures will be used:

1. A team winning the encounter against another team with an equal number of encounters won shall be awarded the higher standing in their division

        

2. Should three teams finish with an equal number of encounters won, the teams with the best win-loss record of matches against the teams they have finished equal with shall be awarded the higher standing.

3. Should the equality still exist following the application of (2) above, the team with the best win-loss record of games against the teams they have finished equal with shall be awarded the higher standing.

4. Should the equality still exist following application of (2) and (3) above, then the team with the best score of points won minus points against them in encounters with the other teams of which they are tied, shall be given the higher standing.

5. Should the equality finally still exist, an additional encounter(s) will occur to eliminate the tie. A coin toss shall be carried out to determine the gender and category (singles or doubles match to be played.

Officials: Roving officials shall be provided for round robin and all medal matches.
