Kaboom Kickball Rules - Tournament updated 01/26/2018


IMPORTANT: Remember, everyone is out there for fun and it’s only a game.   No back talking or abuse of the umpires will be tolerated. These are not “professional” kickball umps and mistakes may be made.   Please treat them with respect, anyone not doing so will be asked to leave.

  1. EQUIPMENT
  1. A size 10” playground ball will be provided for tournament play
  1. PLAYER CONDUCT
  1. Only the captain is allowed to dispute calls with the umpire. Any excessive arguing or abuse of the umpire may result in the ejection of the player.
  2. Players ejected from any game may be required to serve a one or more game suspension pending league review.  Fighting, wrestling, or pushing will not be tolerated and may result in player ejections.
  3. Any player or fan is encouraged to root for their own team but rooting against teams or use of disparaging language is discouraged and could result in penalties of players or dismissals of fans.  Any fans of teams may be asked to leave by Kaboom staff. Refusal to leave could result in forfeiture of games.
  1. ROSTERS/LINEUPS/ELIGIBLE PLAYERS
  1. Everyone playing must be 21 and must sign the team’s roster/waiver before playing.
  2. Any additions to rosters must be made by the start of the 2nd game.
  3. ALL players to be eligible must sign in before they play and must be signed in by the start of the 3rd game.
  1. If a player is not signed in on the roster by then, they are not eligible for the playoffs.
  2. Playing with ineligible players in the playoffs may result in a forfeit.  This call will be made by Kaboom staff.
  1. Pickup players are NOT allowed for ANY games.
  2. Kicking lineups must be presented to the umpire before each game.  
  1. Once the line up cards have been submitted to the umpire, they become official, and you may only add players to the bottom.
  2. All substitutions must be given to the umpire as they are made.
  1. Play consists of 10 (7m/3f).
  2. A team must have at least 8 players including 2 females, to start a game.
  1. GAME PLAY
  1. Game time is forfeit time. Kaboom staff calls game time.
  1. If a team forfeits a game, their opponent will be awarded a 7-0 win
  1. Games are 40 minutes in length, whichever comes first
  1. The inning in progress at the end of 40 minutes will be the last inning and completed.
  2. The ump will enforce this rule and will keep teams informed of time remaining.
  3. Pool play games may end in a tie.
  4. In the case of rain or other event, Kaboom has the right to call a game as official depending on the length played.
  5. If home team is kicking and winning when the 40 minutes are up, the inning WILL BE completed.
  1. Each team gets three (3) outs per inning.
  2. Only 7 runs can be scored in an inning.
  1. The 7th run will count as the 3rd out.
  2. There are no limits to number of runs in the last inning/5 minutes of play (NOT APPLICABLE in playoffs, see below)
  1. RAINOUT - If all teams have completed two pool play games at the time of a rainout, the champion will be determined by record and run differential.  Should less than two games be completed by all teams, a makeup date may be scheduled to replay or finish the tournament.
  1. PITCHING
  1. Pitching must be underhand.
  1. Strike Zone extends 1 foot on either side of home plate and knee high.
  2. The height will be measured from the bottom of the ball and at the apex of the last bounce before the plate.
  3. The ball must bounce at least 3 times before it reaches the plate to be considered a strike, otherwise it is a ball. Kickers can kick balls if they so choose.  If the 3rd bounce is on home plate it is a strike.
  4. Pitcher must stay behind the pitching line until the ball is kicked.
  5. If a male is walked, and a female follows him in the kicking order, the female has the choice to take a walk or kick. Umps will enforce this rule upon request; however, they will not responsible for notifying the kicker in each walk situation.
  1. KICKING
  1. Kicking lineup must be in alternating male/female order.
  2. All kicks must be taken at or behind home plate or a foul will be called.
  3. A ball kicked in front of home plate is a foul ball.
  4. Bunting is allowed for all players as long as it passes the bunt line.
  1. The bunt lin is located approximately 20 feet in front of home plate and extends towards the 1st & 3rd base lines (30ft from the plate on either side of the base)
  2. Balls not crossing the bunt line are foul
  3. A ball that is touched by the defense before it crosses the bunt line is foul.
  4. Any foul ball caught in the air is an out.  If a foul ball is dropped in foul territory, it remains as a foul ball.
  1. BASE RUNNING
  1. All kickers start with a 1-1 count. All fouls are considered strikes.
  2. Players requesting a courtesy runner must do so before their kick.
  1. A player needing a courtesy will need to get to first base on their own. Once play is complete they can switch with their courtesy runner.
  2. Umpires and/or Kaboom staff can overrule courtesy runners to ensure fair play.
  3. Courtesy runner will be the last out of that gender, or furthest in the lineup of that gender if no out.
  1. When running to first base, if there is a possible play at first (i.e. ball is still in the infield) the runner must touch the orange/outside bag or will be called out by the umpire. Defense must use the white/inside bag.
  2. No Lead Offs
  1. All runners must be in contact with the base at the time the ball is kicked.  Any runners not doing so will automatically be called out.
  1. Runners cannot tag up until a fly ball is first touched.
  2. No stealing bases.
  3. Sliding/diving is not permitted.
  1. If a runner slides/ducks into a legal throw that was aimed below the shoulders, the runner is out.
  1. It is ALWAYS as force play at home plate.
  2. Half way between 3rd and home there is a commit line.  Once the runner passes they commit line they have to go home, and cannot return to 3rd.
  1. FIELDING
  1. Maximum of 10 fielders with no more than 7 men in the field.
  2. No more than 6 infielders, one of which must be a catcher
  3. No one may be positioned between the pitcher line and home plate.
  1. “The Pitcher Line” is determined by a real or  imaginary  line drawn from first base to third base.
  2. All infielders must stay behind this line till the ball is kicked.
  1. Outfielders must stay behind boundary line (cones) or at least 10 feet from the grass line, regardless of who is up to kick, until the ball is kicked.
  1. If this rule is violated, the ball remains live until the umpire calls time.  The umpire will then decide which is more advantageous to the kicking team, the kicked ball or an automatic pass to first base.
  1. Outs
  1. Throwing to the baseman who tags the base for a force out.
  2. Hitting the runner with the ball.
  1. Runners may only be hit with the ball from the shoulders down.  If a player ducks or slides into a throw that was aimed below the shoulders, the runner is out.
  2. Throws to hit the runner must be made below the shoulders. The umpire's discretion will be used in whether or not a throw is legal.
  1. Catching a fly ball in kickball is not a sure thing, there is no infield fly rule.  However, there is a no cheese rule.  If the umpire thinks a fielder intentionally misses or does not catch a fly ball in an effort to make a double play or any other advantageous play, both runners will be called safe.
  2. A play is not dead until the ball is in the possession of the pitcher.
  1. Catcher must stay at least 3 feet behind and out of the way of the kicker until the ball is kicked.  However, once the kicker runs up , the catcher is allowed to follow,  keeping a 3ft distance at all times.

  2. Seedings will be determined by (1) winning percentage, (2) head 2 head (if 2 teams are tied), (3)  run differential, (4) most runs scored (5)coin flip
  3. There is no per inning run limit during playoffs.
  4. Playoff Run Rule - 10 runs after 5 innings
  5. There will be overtime during playoffs
  1. Extra innings will start with a runner on second base (base runner is the one who made the last out in the previous inning).
  1. MISCELLANEOUS
  1. No jewelry should be worn during the games (for safety of all players). - Kaboom Staff/Umps have final say.
  2. No metal cleats are allowed.
  3. All teams are responsible for their own trash.
  4. Kaboom reserves the right to adjust and/or insert rules due to game day time restrictions or to ensure fair play.
