Frequently Asked Questions
Can I try lawn bowls without joining the club? I'm not very sporty or competitive, does this matter? |
Q: Can I try lawn bowls without joining the club? A: Yes you can, we just ask that you wear flat, smooth sole shoes as heels can damage the green. We have a selection of spare bowls in a range of sizes that you’re welcome to use. Please have a read of the “New Members” section of this website for more information. Whilst we’re very happy for you to come along when there’s a match being played, this is probably not the best time to give bowls a try. Instead we recommend you contact our membership secretary (see the “Contact us” page) who will arrange a mutually convenient date & time with you to meet someone at the green for a one-to-one bowling introduction. |
Q: How do I join the bowls club? A: You are requested to complete a membership form and return the form with your membership fee to our membership secretary (details on the “Contact us” page). Membership forms are available from either at bowls club green or from our membership secretary. Remember, membership is only £10 for your first year. Having become a member you are then eligible to play in league matches, enter club competitions and enjoy our social activities. |
A: When on the green you need to wear a pair of smooth soled shoes as anything with a heel can damage the green. There is no dress code when having a roll-up on the green, just wear something comfortable. If you are playing in a league match you should wear a white shirt/top with grey trousers, skirt or shorts. We do have a club shirt, in club colours, and these can be ordered. The club will subsidise the cost of your first club shirt. |
A: On day one, you just need a pair of shoes with smooth soles. The Club has a collection of bowls you can use, as it’s important to find the size and weight you’re comfortable with. You’re welcome to borrow the club’s bowls until you’re ready to purchase a set of your own. Your first purchase should be a pair of bowls shoes, these are available from good sports shops or on-line. Once you start playing in league matches it’s recommended you have a white waterproof bowls jacket and a pair of white waterproof trousers as bowls matches are sometimes played in the rain. |
Q: I’m not very sporty or competitive, does this matter? A: You don’t need to be very sporty or competitive to play bowls. The club offers bowls across a range of competitive levels. Some of our members are happy just to play at the club roll-up events, some members just play in the afternoon league which is fairly relaxed, whilst others enjoy competing against other clubs in a more series environment where you’re fighting for promotion and league honours. |
