A NOTE FROM THE DIRECTOR
I’ve been thinking. About identity. About community. And honestly, it terrified me. Not just for our well-being, but because of what it reflects back at me. What does it mean to be a real ally? An imperfect one? How do I respond to my own community’s demand for perfection? And how do I face the failures of allyship around me? Maybe I don’t need to stare in the mirror too long—but I still need answers. And what better place to search than the theater? As an Asian American, I was drawn to David Henry Hwang’s Yellow Face. It’s a play about allyship—especially when it goes wrong. DHH fails his own community. Marcus Gee doesn’t know how to be an ally, so he exploits the moment. While it’s satirical… I’ve seen that play out in real life. More than once.
The play is over 15 years old, but still deeply relevant—enough to be revived on Broadway in 2024. When I directed a Champagne Staged Reading Series
production of the play last year, I focused on the characters’ ties to the AAPI community. But I barely scratched the surface. Hwang’s writing lives in that
blurry space: how do we support—and fail to support—our own identities?
The term “Asian American” carries so much weight. Sometimes I feel deeply connected to it. Sometimes it feels miles away. With this production, I tried to get closer to the why—why that identity means so much to me, and why it sometimes doesn’t feel like mine. So I staged the play inside a museum. Together with an amazing AAPI design team, we built a world around the text to examine it—and ourselves. We asked: why do these characters stumble? Why do some rise when allyship is challenged? And what does that say about American culture in 2025? About us? I don’t have the answers. Not even close. But I’m proud of the questions I’ve asked, the choices I’ve made, and the version of myself reflected back in this process—even the flawed parts. And maybe, just maybe, I understand a little more about what it means to be Asian American today. Hopefully, with time, I’ll stop scrutinizing the mirror so much. Hopefully.

JON WAGNER & LYNNE HOLLINGSWORTH
Lynne Hollingsworth and Jon Wagner’s first Shotgun date was in John Hinkel Park to
witness (twice!) a memorable and affecting production of “Iphigenia in Aulis” that the

looked away since from supporting the theater company that makes a difference and the
box office—and signature drinks!—they love. “Season after season, Shotgun productions

CRAIG & KATHY MOODY
Kathy and Craig are passionate theatergoers and supporters, regularly attending many different Bay Area theaters. Craig has served and is serving on the boards of several theatre companies in honor of his parents, both professional thespians, who took him to plays from the age of two. By osmosis, Kathy has thoroughly absorbed, over roughly half a century of marriage, the theatre bug instilled in Craig by his parents. They believe live theatre can be a mind-altering, life-changing experience which should be available to all. They therefore encourage all who read this to donate. They love Shotgun and consider its artistic director a magnificent force of nature which we and Shotgun’s excellent company
are so extremely fortunate to have in our lives.
RUSSELL NELSON
I worked as a chemist for 40+ years at two pharmaceutical companies – Alza and Genentech – finally retiring in 2022. While working and certainly now, my free time passion has consistently been travel and seeing live Performing Arts events – theater, dance and music. Shotgun Players is one of my favorite theater groups in the Bay Area. The creative programming, the efficient (even miraculous) use of their small space and the wonderful group of people make coming here a real joy!
LES & SUE POLGAR
Since 1996 we have been loyal to Shotgun Players. We love their dedication to attracting young audiences to stage theater. And we are inspired by their commitment to risk -- with both new works and re-imagined classics. Most of all, we honor their community spirit. Bravo! Ragesh Tangri & Daralyn Durie Daralyn, Ragesh, and their daughter Iona have been privileged to experience some amazing theatre here: Beowulf ... In the Wound ... Of the Earth ... Woyzeck ... The Norman Conquests ... Strangers, Babies ... God’s Plot ... Antigonick ... Eurydice ... The Coast of Utopia ... The Village Bike ... Iron Shoes ... Arcadia, Passing Strange, Natasha, Pierre & The Great Comet of 1812, and (of course) Hamlet (Hamlet, Hamlet, Hamlet...). It’s a privilege and a pleasure to be a small part of the extended Shotgun Players family, and to both witness and support the brave, challenging, important, and necessary work that the company, staff, actors, and crew are doing to advance and broaden theatre.
BIBI TIPHANE (They/Them; She/Her)
Bibi is delighted to support the artists and contributors to all productions of Shotgun Players who make this a vibrant and inclusive community.
