Coffee @ Ten: “Weaving After Sherri Smith” with Robin Muller

On Tuesday, November 13, join Crooked Tree Arts Center for the Coffee @ Ten lecture, “Weaving After Sherri Smith” with Robin Muller, fiber artist and featured artist in “Woven Together: The Influence of Sherri Smith.”

During the lecture, Muller will discuss her work included in “Woven Together: The Influence of Sherri Smith,” the evolution of her work, and her creative process.

Muller has been making weavings and other art works for galleries and interior designers since 1979. She has worked mostly as a hand-weaver, but has also made artist’s books and Jacquard weavings on hand and power looms.

Studying with Sherri Smith provided Muller with a key to deciphering and creating complex woven structures, which opened her mind to viewing structure in a larger sense. Muller is currently pursuing ways to make flat textiles into meaningful objects. Her work has taken several forms since she embarked on this pursuit: pictorial scrolls, books, clothing, and upholstery.

On Wednesday, November 14, join Muller as she demonstrates the process of double-weaving at North Central Michigan College from 3 – 5 p.m. The demo session will include an introductory lecture, a weaving demo of checkerboard patterns, an explanation of the design process, and, if time allows, a chance to weave a sample. Workshop tuition is $10.

Then on Thursday, November 15, Muller will host an evening workshop on the art of book-making in CTAC’s Carnegie Building from 5:30 – 8:30 p.m. This hands-on workshop will introduce three basic book structures for use in the classroom and home studio. Students will fold and sew a basic pamphlet, make an accordion book with room for sewn inserts, and use several sewing styles to create a Japanese-style, stab-stitched book. These forms can be adapted to use for a variety of projects in the future, such as diaries, greeting cards, show programs, and artworks. Students will use materials that are accessible and not too messy! Workshop tuition is $35.

Coffee @ Ten is sponsored in part by Roast and Toast and Johan’s of Petoskey. The Coffee @ Ten series is free and open to the public, no reservations are necessary, and all lectures begin at 10 a.m.
