CORE CLASSES

Language Arts

  • Students have started taking their MAP Reading Test and will finish the week of April 25th.
  • Students are studying a Social Issues Book Club unit. They have received their books, along with a calendar with listed meeting dates and expected reading pages.
  • Students are studying character relationships, analyzing pressures characters face, and making connections to their own lives in their books.

Math

Math 6

  • The Unit 13 Test is scheduled for 4/27 (A Day) or 4/28 (B Day). The Unit 13 Study Guide is due on the day of the test.
  • Students must complete 5 topics in ALEKS per week.
  • Reminder: Use Schoology to see updated notes and homework assignments.

Foundations of Algebra

  • The Unit 12 Test is scheduled for 4/27 (A Day) or 4/28 (B Day). The Unit 12 Study Guide is due on the day of the test.
  • Students must complete 5 topics in ALEKS per week.

Science

  • We are beginning of Watersheds unit this week. Students will be learning about the geography of a watershed, focusing on VA regional watersheds. They will study water quality parameters, biotic and abiotic factros that influence a watershed, as well as point and non-point source pollution that affects the health of the water in a watershed. The tentative assessment date for this unit is May 12 and 13.
  • Resources and study materials will be posted on Schoology. Students should be checking their courses for updated information as the unit progresses.

Social Studies

  • We are currently exploring the effects of Westward Expansion on different groups of people.
  • Our PBA summative is scheduled for 5/10 (“A” Day) and 5/11 (“B” Day)
  • Our next unit will be the Civil War.

ENCORE CLASSES

Art

  • Shirk- Students are working on one point perspective and clay monster projects in class right now.

Sketchbook investigations have turned to the different types of Art, how to recognize and Identify them and how to make our own examples in our sketchbook!

  • Williams- 6th graders are creating a Squashbook using an origami technique. They will fill the book with mini-masterpieces reflecting the various elements and principles of design. Along with this, they are glazing their houses in preparation for the May 26th Fine Arts night. More info to follow!

Introduction to Computer Applications (ICA)

  • Students have begun lessons in our Business Unit to include the Professional Document Playlist where they will learn about Job Applications, Business Letters, How to Create Labels and Tables in Google Docs, Outlines, FBLA, and MLA Formatting.  At the conclusion of these lessons, there will be a multiple choice test to assess their knowledge.
  • Students are continuing their progress in Typing Club by completing new intermediate lessons whereby they should achieve up to lesson 210 by the end of April, with the goal of achieving up to lesson 346 by the end of the semester.

Spectrum

  • .Students completed their research for ideas to include in their chosen section of their team’s Community Park.  (Babies/Toddlers, Children, Tweens/Teens, Adults/Seniors or Common Area)  They are working with their team to brainstorm some common features of their park.  Then they will sketch out a team plan as well as an individual plan for their chosen section.  Once all the planning is done, teams will begin to create a scaled blueprint design to show the layout of their community park.  Collaboration and communication are a big focus while working on this project!  I can’t wait to see the results:)
  • Students should be checking their end of week “weekly updates” in Schoology to help them stay on top of things:)

Health/PE

  • Students are completing workout routines to prepare for upcoming fitness testing in the Aux gym. Students continue to play team handball in the main gym. In Health, students are learning about conflict resolution.
