Academic Chemistry Course

Currituck County High School

Mrs. Al Attabi

Fall 2022

COURSE SYLLABUS

Introduction

This course is designed for students to continue their investigation of the chemistry that began in grades K-8 and provide students the necessary skills to be proficient in chemistry. The curriculum includes atomic structure, bonding, reactions and stoichiometry, and properties of matter. The material being covered is in line with the North Carolina Essential Standards for Chemistry.  Students will investigate chemical concepts through experience in laboratories and scientific inquiry.  Since classroom activities and discussions are vital aspects of this course, regular attendance, attention, and participation are very important.

To increase student achievement, the North Carolina Department of Public Instruction provides Essential Standards for this chemistry course. These standards are embedded into the curriculum.

Learning Expectations

I expect you to govern your behavior using one word: RESPECT. Respect me, this classroom, your classmates, and yourself. In return, I will treat you all with respect, provide you a safe learning environment where I will be fair and consistent in my grading and discipline, and do my very best to support you both academically and outside of the classroom.

Materials

Grading

Students will be accountable for completing all assignments. At a minimum, there will be two graded assignments a week. PowerSchool will be updated weekly.

The state has issued a 10-point grading scale that is to be used statewide.  It goes as follows:

A        90-100

B        80-89

C        70-79

D        60-69

F        0-59

The science department issues the following grading scale for each science course.

Tests and Projects                                                40%

Labs (in person and virtual) and Quizzes                                30%

Classwork Assignments                                                30%

There will also be a district-wide final exam, which will account for 20% of your final grade.

Final class grade will be calculated as follows:

1st nine weeks grade    X 0.40             =  __________

2nd nine weeks grade   X 0.40        =  __________

Final exam grade        X 0.20        =  __________     Total the 3 scores for final grade!!

Attendance

Attendance will be taken during all class sessions. If you are absent, please see our Google Classroom agenda for the day(s) you missed. You will be required to make up any work that is missed during your absence. Documentation for excused absences should be emailed to Mrs. Porr. It is your responsibility to request any work that is missed. Weekly agendas will be available on Google Classroom and outside the classroom door each week to outline what we will be doing.

Policy Code: 4400 Attendance

School attendance and class participation are integral parts of academic achievement and the teaching-learning process.  Through regular attendance, students develop patterns of behavior essential to professional and personal success in life.  Regular attendance by every student is mandatory.  The State of North Carolina requires that every child in the State between the ages of 7 (or younger if enrolled) and 16 attend school.  Parents and legal guardians are responsible for ensuring that students attend and remain at school daily, as required by compulsory attendance laws.

Excessive Absences

Class attendance and participation are critical elements of the educational process and may be taken into account in assessing academic achievement.  Students are expected to be at school on time and to be present at the scheduled starting time for each class.  Students who are excessively tardy to school or class may be subject to in-school disciplinary action.

In situations where excessive absence is having a negative impact on student performance, teachers will implement the MTSS (Multi-Tiered System of Supports) problem solving process after the student has accrued 5 consecutive absences or accumulated 10 absences, in order to identify strategies and interventions needed to improve both attendance and academic performance.

A parent is responsible for remaining aware of the number of absences a student has accumulated.  At the conclusion of each nine-week grading period, a student’s report card will indicate the number of absences.  However, the principal shall notify parents and take all other steps required by G.S. 115C-378 for excessive absences.  Students may be subject to in-school disciplinary action for truancy.

Excessive absences may impact eligibility for participation in interscholastic athletics.

Late Work Policy

Students who fail to complete an assignment by the assigned due date will still be allowed to complete the work up to 3 days after the assignment is due for partial credit. Any assignment turned in after the 3rd day will not be awarded credit. Please note that weekends do not count as a late day.

Calendar School Days Late

Grade Impact

1 school day

-10% off total possible points

2 school days

-30% off total possible points

3 school days

-50% off total possible points

After 3 school days

Student will receive a 0

NOTE: Stipulations for extended time as set forth in IEPs and 504s must be complied with prior to the late assignment policy taking effect. If there are extenuating circumstances (i.e., personal crises, internet access issues, etc.), I must be informed prior to the assignments due date for the possibility of an extension.

A student who does not work in class is making a choice to be penalized according to the late work policy.

Discipline

Currituck County High School must be a safe and disciplined environment in order for teachers to teach and students to learn. Standards for behavior are established to foster a safe and disciplined environment. Behavior that detracts from a student’s ability to profit from instruction or interferes with the rights of others warrants disciplinary action. The intent of any disciplinary action is to bring about a positive change in the student’s behavior.

The Currituck County High School Discipline Handbook will be utilized to address any misbehaviors that take place in the classroom. It is the responsibility of both the parent(s)/guardian(s) and the student to familiarize themselves with these policies.

Cell Phone Policy

Cell phones are prohibited from use in classrooms and any other area in which academic work is being done unless otherwise instructed by the teacher.  It is at the discretion of each teacher how we will implement this policy. In my classroom, cell phones will be placed in the designated location at the beginning of each class period and will be used to help take attendance. Cell phones will be returned at the end of the class period. Per the Student/Parent Handbook under Improper Use of School Technology part B:

“Students must follow each teacher’s classroom rules governing the use of technology devices including personal technology devices during each class bell. Cellular phones, i-watches, and earbuds are not permitted for use during instruction time in all classes at CCHS.

School Policy

Academic Integrity

Students will be honest and submit his/her own work. Violating rules of honesty and Honor Codes, including but not limited to plagiarism or copying another student’s test or assignment, are prohibited. Failure to comply with these rules will be deemed as a major violation of misrepresentation. Any student that is found cheating or plagiarizing will receive a zero for that assignment with the potential for further escalation. In addition, your parent/guardian will be notified of the incident and you will be referred to the honor court. Disciplinary action will be taken by the school’s administration team.

Power Time

Power Time will be utilized for the purpose of remediation and to complete missing assessments. If you wish to receive extra help or have concerns that need to be addressed, please feel free to contact me prior to Power Time to set up a meeting. Assessments can only be made up if a legitimate reason is provided in advance. In all cases, academic subjects should take priority over clubs during PowerTime.
