Divine Saviour & St. Ann

Laudate pueri Dominum laudate nomen Domini - Ps. 112.1

29 November 2018

First Sunday of Advent

We the Church enter into Advent and the new liturgical year with a call for a watchful confidence. Our readings were originally addressed to communities undergoing great loss and confusion. Jeremiah speaks confidently of God fulfilling the ancient promises to Israel, even during a time of foreign invasion. Paul speaks of God leading the Church into holiness, while the community longs for the coming of Jesus. In the Gospel passage from Luke, Jesus speaks of powerful signs and of great confusion to come, but emphasizes that we may look forward knowing that God brings not cause for despair, but hope. We celebrate Advent to remind each other of God’s faithfulness. We are to be watchful, to see how God is stirring up our world. God both disturbs our pride and complacency, and brings us healing and justice. We prepare ourselves to welcome Jesus, confident that God indeed fulfills all these divine promises.

The Power of Prayer

As Catholics, prayer is essential to our everyday life - prayers of praise, prayers of thanks, and prayers of petition. We recognize God as the source of all we are and all we will be. It is by uniting our hearts and minds with God through prayer that we can carry out our work for the good of His Kingdom. Just as we hear in 1 Thessalonians 5:16-18, "Be joyful always; pray continually; give thanks in all circumstances, for this is God's will for you in Christ Jesus."

As the message of Called to Renew continues to be shared throughout the Archdiocese, we ask that you continue to keep the success of the campaign in your prayers. A campaign prayer has been created for the Called to Renew effort:

God of love and God of life,

We thank You for your blessings.

Especially the gift of life and the gift of faith.

Father, give us wisdom and courage

and guide us as we call Your family here in Los Angeles to renewal.

Help us to raise up a new generation of missionary disciples

to proclaim the good news of Your mercy

and to serve our brothers and sisters in need.

Fill us with Your Spirit,

that we might call Your sons and daughters

to be priests and deacons and consecrated religious to dedicate their lives to You;

that we might call Your Church

to bring healing to the sick and love to the poor and those in prison;

that we might call our young people

to seek Your beautiful plan for their lives.

Father, give us all new excitement to follow Jesus

and to serve You with all our hearts and all our strength.

Increase our faith and give us confidence to offer You

our gifts, our talents and our treasure —

that we might find our true treasure in heaven with You.

Trusting in the tender love of our Blessed Mother, Queen of the Angels,

we ask all this in the name of Your Son, Jesus Christ. Amen.

Together in Mission

Thank you for the love and support you show to your parish

Important Information and Continuing Events

in the Archdiocese

  1. Request for Support for Victims of the Recent Wildfires
The recent wildfires in Southern California, including in the northern part of the San Fernando Region, have forced thousands to flee from their homes and left many without work because of the businesses destroyed or severely impacted.  Many people have been left with nowhere to go and the immediate need for food and shelter will soon become apparent.  At least one of our parishes in the San Fernando Region voluntarily evacuated the Church premises, although no buildings were reported lost.  It will take several days to learn the full extent of any damage or injury for those who have been impacted.

Earlier this year the Thomas Fire in the Santa Barbara Region, which affected so many of our own family and friends, taught us how important it is to be prepared to provide shelter, food and temporary financial support.
We are requesting your help in establishing a Fire Fund  to provide immediate and critical support to those affected by the Woolsey and Hill fires.
  2. Your donation can be mailed to:
The Fire Fund c/o San Fernando Pastoral Region
    15101 San Fernando Mission Blvd.
    Mission Hills, CA 91345
Or, simply place your check in the parish Sunday collection basket.
  3. If you know of anyone who is in immediate need of temporary shelter, food or assistance, they can contact the pastor of their nearest Catholic church for help.
  1. In response to the USCCB’s pastoral initiative and stance against domestic violence and their support for victims of domestic violence, the Office of Family Life, has organized an event on Responding to Domestic Violence: Leadership Awareness Training’ on Friday, January 18, 2019. As First Responders to Domestic Violence in the Parish Community we invite; Clergy, Parish/School Staff, VIRTUS® Facilitators, Marriage Preparation Couples and Lay Ministers. Please SAVE THE DATE and share the attached invitation with your Parish Leaders. This Training will be offered in both ENGLISH and SPANISH. The United States Conference of Catholic Bishops (USCCB) has released the Media Toolkit for October’s Domestic Violence Awareness Month, which includes social media tips to spread peace, prayers and petitions to assist clergy and liturgy committees in incorporating Domestic Violence Awareness into the liturgy. Additionally, an article with homily helps or suggestions for preaching about family violence. The USCCB documents are available online: http://www.catholicsforfamilypeace.org/uploads/9/7/5/4/9754767/toolkitfinal__1_.pdf http://www.usccb.org/about/laity-marriage-family-life-and-youth/womens-issues/preaching-tips.cfm For additional resources go to the USCCB Domestic Violence website at: http://www.usccb.org/issues-and-action/marriage-and-family/marriage/domestic-violence/index.cfm
  2. Office for Worship:  Training for Ministry of Consolation Throughout the Archdiocese The Office for Worship is offering the following training sessions for the Ministry of Consolation.  People are welcome to go to any training session, not only the one for one’s own pastoral region.
