Hormazd Narielwalla was born in 1979 in India, but lives and works in London. Materials commonly used in his process are repurposed vintage material, antiques, and bespoke tailoring patterns. The subject matters or themes of his work are identity, migration, memory, and diaspora, and he works with the following questions:

Who are we? Where do we come from? Who might we become?

I chose Hormazd Narielwalla as my spotlight artist because of his interesting take on art. He began his career as a fashion designer, later transitioning to art, giving him a unique skill set. He incorporates unusual mediums into his work, which is something I have always been interested in. He also uses these mediums to create abstract art of things he is passionate about. I find abstract art particularly interesting because it allows for an artist to create whatever they want, without needing to maintain a realistic image.

Narielwalla uses old fabrics to create the majority of his work, which I found especially intriguing. He is repurposing materials which is especially important in today’s day and age, as it produces less waste. He finds a way to use pre-existing materials to create something wonderful. In doing this, he also indirectly advocates for the environment, as he inspires others to try using materials they already own instead of purchasing more which creates more waste and harms the environment.

Using fabrics and other repurposed materials gives Narielwalla limited options in terms of color and pattern, meaning he has to work with what he has and create his art around the material he uses. I think this is something very interesting which I would like to try in my artwork because I think it allows one to think more creatively and create extraordinary work using simple materials.
