Considerable class time will be spent in communicative tasks in Spanish, i.e. exchanging experiences, information, ideas, and social courtesies. Instruction in grammar, spelling, pronunciation, and punctuation will build as the year progresses, so students will be able to respond to simple directed questions and have a firm foundation for the next level. Students will also become better acquainted with the customs of Spanish speaking people through an introduction to their music, art, sports, recreational activities, festivals, history, and geography.

Spanish 2 is the second year-long course in a sequence that focuses on integrating the skills of listening comprehension, speaking, reading, writing, and cultural awareness. The second-year course begins with a review of the major concepts learned in first-year and then introduces new vocabulary and new tenses, so that by the end of the year students who have consistently prepared and participated should be able to not only say what they do on a regular basis, what they are doing right now, what they are going to do later, and give simple commands, (first year structures), but also what they did yesterday, what they used to do as a child, and what they were doing when something happened. The themes covered are school rules and regulations, extracurricular activities, running errands, getting ready to go out...etc. The course is taught using a variety of modalities, and students are expected to work individually, in partners, and in groups on a daily basis. By the end of the second year, students should be able to understand Spanish at a beginning / intermediate level. Completion of this course with a "C" or better qualifies students for advancement to Spanish 3.

Spanish 3  Is a third in a sequence of courses that cover the study of all aspects for world languages—speaking, listening, reading, writing, and culture utilizing a thematic teaching approach. Themes will include outdoor experiences, sporting events, visual and performing arts, health and nutrition, interpersonal communication, community service, leadership skills and work experience. Using language for communication is emphasized, as well as developing historical, cultural, geographical and contemporary awareness of the Spanish–speaking world. At appropriate times, historical and cultural eras, movements, events and leaders will be studied. The third-year course expands knowledge of vocabulary and grammar, accelerates oral comprehension and expression, and raises reading proficiency and written communication. These goals are reached through directed conversations, simulations, role-playing, oral presentations, and group activities. Instructional strategies will encourage students to demonstrate learning in a variety of ways: working cooperatively with other students and developing individual responsibility for their own learning.
